, rI`his invention relates to improvements in hair dressing devices and is directed more particularly to improvements in hair forming devices for curling, rolling, waving, or otherwise forming or dressin the hair.

According to one object o the invention a device is provided which is adapted for applying to the hair so that it may serve as a form whereby the hair may be curled, waved, crimped or rolled. In fact by reason of the novel construction of the device as will be hereinafter described the device of the invention is adapted for general use in connection with the treatment or formino of womens hair so that various novel effects may be produced.

The device of the invention is not only simple in form so as to be economical to manufacture but is so constructed that it may be readily and easily employed by unskilled hands for many and various purposes.

The invention for purposes of disclosure may be called a former and will be described in connection with the rolling of the hair or the forming of the hair into a roll. Reference will be made to the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Referring to the drawing in detail the invention will now be fully described.

rIhe device 2 of the invention as shown in Fig. 1, and for convenience will be called a hair former, comprises, a pair of side members 4 which are arranged more or less parallel to one another and are4 preferably joined together at or adj aoent their ends.

rllhe members 4 are preferably made of bendable material which is relatively nonresilient so that they may be bent into various shapes and will retain their shape rather than function like springs so as to not be adapted to retain'the shape desired.

For instance the members `2 may be in the form of a covered core of wire such as copper, iron or other more or less bendable material and the covering may be of fabric, rubber or the like. vThis core may be round in cross section and if desired there may 'bea plurality of core members.

The side members 4 in Fig. 1 may be formed from a continuous length of material the ends of which may be suitably joined together beneath one of a pair of clips 6 which may firmly embrace the members 2 as shown.

By securing the members 2 together by the clips 6 there is provided a hair receiving slot .8 between the side members while end portions Lsuch as 1() outside the clips may bend so as to be used as'locks or stays as will be later described.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 a former device 12 may consist of members 14 which are similar to `the members 4. These may be joined together at their ends b clasps 16 and in this way lthere is provided a slot 18 between the side members 14.

Another form of the device is shown at 22 in Fig. 3 and this comprises side members 24 which are suitably joined together at their y members. The end portions 30 of the side members may function as locks or 'stays as will presently appear.

In operation where it is desired to roll the hair or otherwise form it the hair is inserted in the slot between the side members of the device. As in Fig. 4 the hair may be inserted in the slot of a former such as 2 so that it lies between the side members. When so inserted the device is rotated or rolled one or more times so as to wind or roll up the hair therearound and in the form of a roll as shown in Fig. 6.

When the forming operation is completed the ends of the former device are turned inthicknesses of hair.

As will be seen, by providing side members of 'yieldable material which are joined together there is formed a hair receiving slot which may be adapted to receive varying Because the material of the former is bendable the end portions thereof may be bent to embrace or press against the hair and thereby lock the whole in the form desired. The former device is readily bendable as it embraces the hair so that the whole will conform more or less to the shape of the neck or head adjacent thereto.

Various changes may be made in the form of the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A hair forming device of the class described comprising in combination, side members of bendable metal covered with nonmetallic material, a pair of clasps adjustably secured to and intermediate the ends of said side members to form a hair receiving slot therebetween, looped ends formed exteriorly of said clasps, said looped ends being adapted to be bent adjacent said clasps for firmly gripping and retaining the hair whenin rolled position.

2. A hair forming device of the class described comprising in combination, side members of bendable metal covered with non-A metallic material, a pair of clasps adjustably secured to and intermediate the ends of said side members to form a hair receiving slot therebetween, looped ends formed exteriorly of said clasps and a clasp attached toeach of said looped ends whereby the hair is gripped and locked when in rolled position.

3. A hair forming device o f the class described comprising in combination, side members of bendable metal covered with non-metallic material: a p`air of clasps adjustably secured to and intermediate the ends of said side members to from a hair receiving slot therebetween, looped ends formed exteriorly of said clasps and havin a clasp attached thereto, said 4looped en being adapted to be bent adjacent said first-mentioned clasps for firmly gripping and locking the hair. when 'in rolled position.

4. A hair forming device comprising in combination, side members of bendable metal covered with non-metallic material, clasps therearound in spaced relation and adjacent the end portions of said device to hold said members against separation, and end portions outside said clasps in the form of closed loops to afford a stable support for grasp of the thumb and fingers whereby to ensure bending and shaping of the side members under complete control of the operator for application to the hair.

5. A hair forming device comprising in combination, side members of bendable metal covered with non-metallic material held together by clasps in spaced relation to provide an elongated slot therebetween, and end portions in the form of closed loops located outside of said clasps to afford a stable support for grasp of the thumb and fingers whereby to ensure bending and shaping of the side members under complete control of the operator for application t0 the hair.

6. A hair forming device comprising in combination, bendable metallic material shaped to have similar parallel side members joined together at opposite ends and clasps in spaced relation therealong spaced inwardly from the extremities of said joined together opposite ends forming a central elongated slot therebetween and closed loops outside said clasps, the said clasps holding said members against separation at points between adjacent ends of said slot and loops to afford a stable support for grasp of the thumb and lingers whereb to ensure bending and shaping of the si e members under complete control of theoperator for application to the hair.

"7. A hair dressing device including a pair of hair receiving members forming a slot to receive the hair therebetween, clasps therearound in spaced relation and spaced from the ends of the device to create loops having a stiffness at least as rigid as that of the combined side members to afford a stable sup- ,port for grasp of the thumb and fingers whereby to ensure bending and shaping of the side members under complete control of the operator for'application to the hair.

8. A hair dressing device including a pair of hair receiving members composed of covered wire, clasps to hold said members together to create a slot therebetween,l and loops comprising the ends`of said device, said loops being formed of substantially the same material and of the same size as said members to afford a stable support for grasp of the thumb and lingers whereby to ensure bending and shaping of the side members under complete control of the operator for application to the hair.

9. A hair dressing'device composed of a single piece of covered wire bent to form side members, clasps to secure said members'together and at a distance from the end of the device to create closed loops toaford a stable support for grasp of they thumb and fingers whereby to ensure bending and shaping of the side members under complete conlrol of the operator for application to the air.

10. In a hair former, the combination of 12. In a hair former, the combination of' a pair of substantially parallel side members of flexible material connected at their corresponding endsand a pair of spaced clasps connecting the members together intermediate their ends to form a hair-receiving slot therebetween, at least one of said clasps being adjustable along the members to vary the length of the hair-receiving slot.

13. In a hair former, the combination of a. pair of substantially parallel side members of flexible material, and slidable means connecting the members together at spaced points to define a 'hair-receiving slot of adjustable length between them, the end portion of at least one member at each end extending beyond the corresponding means at that end of the former and adapted to be bent to lie adjacent the portions of the members defining the slot.

14. A hair former consisting of a pair of substantially parallel side members of Hexible material, and means connecting the corresponding ends of the members together at their extremities to form a hair-receiving slot therebetween.
