Filed May 20, 1940 ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 12, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
The invention relates to a hair waving implement and more especially to a hair Wave-forming comb.
The primary object of the invention is the pro- 5 vision of an implement of this character wherein the same through self-adjusting teeth involved in a comb construction will enable the 'latter to conform to the shape of the head of a person so that the strands of hair upon the head can be worked upon for imparting a wave or waves thereto throughout a determined area of the head and in this manner through the wide range of the implement the hair can be curled with dispatch or waved in the least possible time.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an implement of this` character wherein the teeth are sustained under tension individually and in this manner being self-adjustable to assure Contact with the scalp irrespective of irregularity in the head formation so that complete waving or curling of the hair can be carried forth with ease and rapidity, the implement being novel in its entirety.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an implement of this character wherein in the use thereof a holding element can be brought into `position so that the strands of hair can be held firmly during the curling or waving thereof without the necessity of the use of the fingers on the hand of a person or operator, leaving the hand or hands free for manipulation of the implement in carrying forth lthe curling or waving operation. i
A still further object of the invention is the o5 provision of an implement of this character wherein on the breaking of any of the teeth thereof, new teeth can be placed therein or if the teeth become defective in operation, repairs can be made with ease and dispatch.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an implement of this character,
which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily handled for the curling or waving of hair upon the head of a person, being self-adjustable, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. In Ithe accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the implement constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 isa top edge View partly'in section of the implement.
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken approximately on the line 3--3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the teeth of the implement detached therefrom. 10
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the holding element for the hair.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line ii-S of Figure 5 looking in the direction of the arrows. l5
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A desighates generally the combing implement consti- 20 tuting the present invention while B denotes generally the holder for the strands of hair upon the head of a person usable with the implement A and such implement andi-holder Ywill be hereinafter fully described in detail. 25
The implement A, which is in the nature of a comb, comprises an outwardly arched, hollow body IB, which is really the main blade creating a back to a comb. This body IIJ has a removable side cover plate il, which is separably fastened 30 in place by fasteners I2. The body I 0 is out-Y wardly arched in one direction so that in its application it will substantially conform to the contour of the scalp or head of a person.
Formed interiorly of the body I0 are spaced, 35 parallel guideways i3, which through restricted openings lll through the conveXed edge l5 of said body I0 expose or project a plurality of combing teeth I6 beyond said conVeXed edge l5 of the body for a purpose presently described. 40
Each tooth I6 is formed with a head I1 conforming to the guideways I3 which are substantially squared in cross section. These heads i'l slidably t within the guideways I3 for selfadjustment individually of the teeth I6 in the 45 use of the implement.
The teeth I6 are of uniform length with respect to each other so that inthe projecting thereof from the body I0 such teeth at the free tip ends thereof follow the concaved edge I5 in conforma- 50 tion similar thereto. i
Confined within the guideways I3 and active upon the heads Il of the teeth I6 are coiled compression springs I8 which urge the said teeth I6 outwardly through the restricted openings I4 and 55 beyond the concaved edge I5 and at the same time enable self-adjustment individually of the said teeth and the maintenance ofthe same under tension. The implement in its construction, When infuse, will enable the teeth I6 to become adjusted in conformity with the shape of the head of a person and assures the contact of these teeth With the scalp of the head and also enables the strands of hair upon the head to be worked for the curling and Waving thereof through manipulation of the said implement.
Adapted to be used in connection with the implement A is the holder B, Which comprises an arched gripping member I9, made preferably from rubber, and from which intermediate the ends thereof protrudes a hand grip or grasp wing 2li, which is also of the same material as the arched gripping member E9. This holder B is designed to saddle the head of a person so that the strands of hair When to be worked upon by the implement A can be held against the scalp, the said holder B being grasped in the hand of an operator at the wing 2l) and brought into saddling position to have the member I9 overlie the hair upon the head so that when such holder B is pressed against the latter the strands of hair will be permanently held thus relieving the necessity of holding these strands by the fingers of a hand as is customary. The implement A is manipulated similarly to a standard make of comb so that the curling of the hair or the Waving thereof can be brought about concurrently when using the holder B for the purposes specified. The teeth I6 of the implement A will become adjusted individually through the self-adjustment thereof and in this manner the combing of the hair can be had with dispatch and ease and Without eX- cessive manipulation of a comb of standard make as is generally used for the Waving or curling of the hair. The implement A is of wide range so that maximum extent of strands of hair can be Worked in one movement of the implement for the curling or waving of such hair.
