Description
Oct. 15, 1957 1.. KING 2,809,642
HAIR CURLER AND HOLDER THEREFOR Filed Aug. 1, 1955 IN VEN TOR. [VJ/115mm;
United States 2,809,642 HAIR CURLER AND HOLDER THEREFOR Lucille King, Bartow, Fla. Application August 1, 1955, Serial No. 525,716 4 Claims. (Cl. 132-34) This invention relates to a hair curler and holder therefor especially designed for use in the operation of providing a permanent wave or for setting the hair.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a simplified curler of the character hereinafter described and formed of such material as will best serve the purpose.
More specifically, an object of the invention is to provide a curler and holder therefor of such construction that by means of the holder the curler may be held against the head for winding upon the curler a strand of hair, the curler being so constructed that upon removal of the holder it will receive bobby pins or the like for removably attaching the curler to the head.
Another object is to provide for such a curler a holder especially useful for holding the curler against the head and for rotating the same during the operation of winding the hair on the curler.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a curler and holder therefor which may be used either in giving permanent waves or in setting the hair.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view showing a number of curlers embodying my invention in applied position upon the head;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the curler and holder embodied in my invention;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the curler and holder shown in Fig. 2 in exploded relation with respect to each other;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the method of attaching the curler to the head.
My improved curler and holder may be formed of such material and of such size as will best serve the purpose. The drawings (Figs. 2-3) illustrate the the preferred size of the curler and holder. Any number of curlers may be used in the operation of permanent waving or hair setting.
The curler embodying my invention is indicated at 10. It is formed from a cylindrical body of suitable material, such as plastic or the like, to provide a base 11. The body is bifurcated transversely of the base 11 to provide intersecting slots 12.
The holder, indicated at 13, is preferably formed of the same material as the curler 10. It is elongated in formation and of a length and diameter for convenient grasping and holding by the hand of the operator. The opposite end portions 14 of the holder are grooved to provide longitudinally extending fins 15 forming in cross section a cross, to conform to the shape of the intersecting slots 12 of the curler 10. As shown, either end por- 2,809,642 Patented Oct. 15, 1957 tion of the holder 13 is adapted to fit into the slots 12 of the curler 10. However, if it is desired to use the holder 13 with two sizes of curler, one end portion 14 may be formed so as to conform to another size of curler.
In use, the curler 10 is placed with the base 11 thereof in bearing engagement with the head. The placement of the curler in bearing engagement with the head is facilitated by the holder having its one end thereof removably engaging in the slots 12. Through the medium of the holder 13, the curler 10, while held against the head, is rotated to facilitate the winding of a strand of hair around the curler. After this has been accompished, the holder is removed and a hobby pin or pins employed to attach the curler 10 to the head. This is accomplished by projecting one leg 16 of a hobby pin 17 through one of the slots 12 and projecting the other leg 18 through the hair beneath the base 11. If desired, two pins may be used, the legs 16 thereof crossing each other through the slots 12 of the curler.
With the curler it held firmly in place by the bobby pin or pins, the hair is allowed to set, after which the pins and curlers are removed, resulting in strong, smooth, and uniformly constructed curls. As shown in Fig. 1, any number of curlers may be applied, depending upon the number of curls desired.
The curler as well as the holder may be formed of any desired size, according to the size of the curl desired. It is intended that the curler and holder be formed of such material as will be adaptable for use with various types of solutions.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
i. In combination a curler comprising a body having a base engageable with the head, a rotatable holder for holding the base of said body against the head while said body is rotated by said holder to wind strands of hair about said body and said holder, and means providing a removable connection between the body and the holder when said strands of hair are wound upon said curler.
2. In combination a curler comprising a body having a base engageable with the head, a holder for holding the curler against the head and for rotating the same during the winding of a strand of hair upon the curler, means providing a removable connection between the body and the holder, said means comprising radially disposed longitudinally extending fins located on at least one end of the holder, and intercepting slots formed on the body for reception of said fins.
3. In combination a curler comprising a body having a base adapted to be placed against the head, said body having a cylindrical portion and said cylindrical portion being bifurcated to provide intercepting slots extending in the same plane as the adjacent side of the base to receive a connecting element for removably connecting the body to the head with strands of hair Wound upon the body, said element being a bobby pin having one leg of which projects through the hair wound upon said body and through the slot and the other leg of which is projected into the hair beneath the base of said body, and an elongated holder having an end portion shaped for removable engagement in the slots in a longitudinal di- 7 body against rection with respect to said body to facilitate holding the the head While said holder is rotated to likewise rotate said body to wind strands of hair about said body and said end, portion of said holder.
4. In combination: a clirler comprising a cylindrically formed body having a base engageable with the head, the cylindrical body being bifurcated transversely to provide at least one slot extending longitudinally of the cylindrical body, and an elongated cylindrical holder having an end portion shaped tojcorrespond to the shape of said slot and of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter ofsaid body .and'for projecting in said slot to facilitate'removably holding the cylindrical body against References Cited in the tile of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Conine Nov. 27, 1923 Farm Mar. 8, .1949 Weaver et a1.
