This invention relates to hair curlers of the type used in setting the hair in pin curl fashion and which is particularly adapted for use in the process of giving a cold wave or home permanent, and in particular this invention includes a hub having elongated radially disposed slots therein with a flange having a notch in one side positioned on the end of the hub and with a binding having openings in the ends for retaining hair wrapped around the hub in position.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a hair curler that is simple in construction and operation and in which springs, levers, wires, friction caps and the like are eliminated.

In the conventional type of hair curler spring clips or other attaching devices are used for holding the hair in position or for clamping the hair. against a core and curlers of this type are objectionable particularly to unskilled operators.

With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an integral unit without moving parts and wherein hair is drawn through slots and wrapped around the core or hub so that the hair is started from the scalp and wrapped evenly around the curler and whereby each coil of the curl is of the same size.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a hair curler so that hair may be efficiently curled with unskilled operators,

Another object of the invention is to provide a hair curler in which all moving parts are eliminated.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved hair curler of the one-piece type which is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an elongated cylinder or hub having elongated radially disposed slots therein providing a plurality of extended fingers, with a flange at one end of the hub and with a binding strip in which the ends are adapted to be placed over the fingers of the hub for retaining hair in position thereon.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from'the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a view illustrating the hair curler with a lock of hair started through the notch in the flange and extended through one of the slots in the body of the curler.

Figure 2 is a similar view wherein winding of the lock of hair is started with the winding being continued in a, counter-clockwise direction.

Figure 3 is a similar view showing the hair formed on the curler with a binding strap started over the hair.

Figure 4 is a similar view showing the binding strap wrapped over the hair with the ends secured over one of the fingers of the curler.

Figure 5 is a sectional plan through the curler taken on line 55 of Figure 6.

Figure 6 is a longitudinal section through the curler taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved curler of this invention includes a cylindrical body or hub having a plurality of fingers It with elongated longitudinally disposed slots ll separating the fingers and with the fingers extended'from a flange l2 having a notch l3 therein.

The binding strip [4 which retains the hair on the curler is provided with openings [5 and I6 spaced from the ends and, as illustrated in Figure 3 one end of the binding strip is secured on the curler as the strip is wrapped over the hair and the strip is secured in position by placing the opening in the extended end of the strip over one of the fingers.

With the parts formed in this manner the curler is positioned with the flange held fiat against the head and a lock of hair, as indicated by the numeral I! is drawn through the notch l3 and through a slot I8, which communicates with the notch I3, into the opening through the center of the curler and through one of the slots II, as shown in Figure 1.

From this position hair is carried around the outer surfaces of the fingers as shown in Figures 2 and 3 and with the hair wrapped around the fingers the binding strip I5 is started by placing the opening I5 over one of the fingers l0 and wrapping the strip around over the hair until the opening I6 is placed over another of the fingers.

This permits the hair to be wrapped in a perfeet circle with each curl of the same size and the curlers may be provided in different sizes so that the diameters of the curl may be changed as desired.

The hollow hub or cylinder provides contact with waving lotions on both the inside and outside of the curler and at the same time the hair is exposed at all times during waving and drying processes.

The curler may be formed of molded plastic material, or of any suitable material.

It will be understood that modifications may 3 be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

A hair curler comprising a cylinder having elongated longitudinally disposed slots therein providing spaced fingers and a flange on one end of the cylinder, said flange having a notch therein and said notch positioned to communicate with one of the slots between the fingers of the cylinder, the slots being of such a length that they terminate in a plane extending above the horizontal plane of the flange, and a binding strip having openings spaced from the ends thereof whereby one of the fingers is positioned in one 15 of the openings in the binding strip and the same is wrapped around the fingers until the opening in the opposite end of the binding strip connects with and is received on the said one finger.
