APPARATUS FOR DRESSING AND DRYING HAIR Filed Oct. 7, 1944 Patented July 1, 1947 APPARATUS FOR DRESSING AND DRYING HAIR I Otto R. Nemeth, Chicago, Ill., assignor, by mesne assignments, to Helene Curtis Industries, Inc., a corporation of Illinois Application October 7,
1944, Serial No. 557,689
6 Claims. (01. 132-33) able discomfort and also because the drying of the curls from the outside inwardly is exceedingly slow.
Various apparatus and devices have been used with applied to the curls individually so as to effect their drying from tion to provide a device for invention and the purview of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the curling device embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional View of the curling device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is the perspective view of the curling device shown in Fig. 1, illustrating tresses of hair wound and secured thereon.
Referring to the drawing, the curling device E5 is of a kind to have a tress of hair wound thereon prior to attaching same external diameter. The portions of the body 36, between the flanges 37 and 38, are each formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart circumferential grooves 25, each of which is placed in communication with the interior of the body through a plurality of radial ports or similar passages 26.
One end of the curling device 59 is formed with a nipple 39 having a central opening thereheater-compressor whereby compressed, heated air may be delivered into the interior of the body. The other or closed end of the body is formed with a boss 40 having a size and shape substantially like that of the nipple 39. The nipple 39 and the boss 40, each of which extend beyond the ends of the body portion 36, provide suitable means for holdin the curling device during the winding operation. 'The nipple 39- and the boss 40 further are each provided with an external circumferential groove ll, one of which has firmly attached thereto one end of a This strand is, as; best shown in Fig. 1, preferably made of elastic malength considerably less than retaining strand 42.
terial and it is of a the length of the curling device so as to require it to be stretched in order to engage its free end 42a over the other nipple used for securing curling device. Such stretching and fastening of the strand 42 is best illustrated in Fig. 4 wherein the curling device, is shown having the tress of hair wound thereon and secured inplace bysuch strand. It should be evident, that. the strand 42 may readily be disengaged from the nipple 39 upon the completionof the curling and drying operation, whereupon the. curl. may be unwound from the curling device and the process of hair dressing,v completed in the usual,.man nor as by combing and setting.
Tresses wound upon, the, curling device in, the manner shown in Fig. 4 are held spaced from the scalp by the spacer flange .38 and as a result the passage of heated air through the wound tress is not impeded and, the, scalp is not heated by such escaping air.
It should be understood, that while the curling device of the present inventionv and the method of setting the, curls have been described in detail herein, and particularly illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, such curling devices mayembody other details of construction and the invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1 A curling device for Waving of hair comprising, in combination, a hollow cylindrical body portion closed at one end, an external circumferential flange at each end of said body portion, an external circumferential spacer flange on said body portion between said end flanges, a nipple on the other end of said body in communication with the interior thereof, a plurality of circumferential grooves in the outside surface of the body spaced apart longitudinally between said flanges, and a plurality of ports in said body communicating with the interior of the body and opening into the circumferential grooves.
