HAIR CURLER Filed Feb. 7,' 1940 I N V EN TOR. JOSEPH JACO BS flTTOR/VEY Patented June 10, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE HAIR CURLER Application February 7, 1940, Serial No. 317,619
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in hair curlers and has for one of its objects to provide an improved curler of simple and practical construction wherein the body of the curler is made of separate sections capable of detachment one from the other, and in which a retaining means for said sections consists of end members removably engageable with the ends of said body and connected to each other by a hair strand-retaining element.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a hair curler constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig ure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the three parts of the curler separated from each other.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the curler, illustrating the initial step in the formation of a curl, and
Figure 6 is a similar view showing the curl completed and the parts of the curler in fully as sembled position.
In the preferred form herein illustrated, the body of the curler is shown as comprising a pair of elongated sections 1 of like construction made of resilient material, such as rubber, and of solid formation. The separate sections, which are completely detachable from one another, are longitudinally tapered and each has a flat inner surface 8 adapted to contact the corresponding surface of the other section throughout the entire length thereof when said sections are in assembled, cooperative relation and before the interposition of the end of a strand of hair therebetween, as indicated in Figure 5. The outer surface of each section is of substantially semicylindrical contour so that when the sections are placed together the body of the curler will be substantially cylindrical in form. Said outer surface of each section is also longitudinally fluted, as indicated at 9, to provide grooves which form air spaces within the strand of hair wound upon the curler body, to thus facilitate drying of the hair. By tapering the sections 1, a wound strand thereon may be more easily removed when it is slipped off the smaller end of the curler body.
The invention further comprises a retaining means having the dual functions of releasably holding the ends of the two sections 1 in cooperative relation and of retaining or clamping a wound strand of hair in place on the curler body. Said means preferably is made of a single piece of rubber, or the like, and comprises two end caps l0 and l l of different sizes, the larger cap H) being adapted to receive therein the larger ends of the sections 1. When the cap I l is fitted over the smaller ends of said sections, the latter will be held in cooperative relation so as to clamp the end of a hair strand therebetween. Joining the inner open ends of said caps 10 and II, is a retaining strap l2 which is of such length that when the device is in position upon the body of the curler and a hair strand is wound thereon, said strap will be more or less stretched over said strand, as shown in Figure 6, to thereby aid in retaining the strand in its normal condition.
In practice, when it is desired to wind a strand of hair upon the curler, the cap It! may first be placed over the larger ends of the sections 1, as in Figure 5, to hold them together and, after the free end of said strand has been placed between said sections, the same are rotated to wind the strand thereabout. With the curl completed, as in Figure 6, the cap I I is then mounted upon the smaller end of the curler body after stretching the strap 12 over said strand. The curl is thus securely held in position while setting and can be readily removed from the body of the curler by first detaching the cap H from the smaller ends of the sections 1 and then slipping the curl oif said body in the direction of said ends.
What is claimed is:
A hair curler consisting of three one-piece sections of resilient rubber, two of said sections being identical in conformation and each being in the form of a slightly tapered semi-cylinder with longitudinally extending flutes on its convex surface, and said pieces when assembled by bringing their fiat surfaces into contact constituting the body portion of the hair curler, said body portion being in the form of a slightly tapered cylinder with longitudinally extending flutes on its convex surface, and a unitary retaining member of elastic rubber, said retaining member comprising a hollow cap of resilient rubber adapted to fit tightly over the wider end of said body portion so as to clamp the wider ends of the two sections thereof together, and a second hollow cap adapted to fit tightly over the narrower end of said body portion, so as to clamp the narrower ends of the sections thereof together, and a retaining strap joining said caps and resisting displacement of said caps from their seated positions on the ends of said body portion.
