Filed Nov. 17, 1959, Ser. No. 853,566 Ciaims. (Cl. 132 40) The present invention generally relates to a hair curler and more particularly to such a curler adapted for acting as a form upon which hair is rolled with the hair curler incorporating novel means for retaining itself in position without any external fastening devices.
In presently available hair curlers, there is conventionally provided a cylindrical member or a similar type of member which is adapted to have the hair rolled thereon and after the hair has been rolled on the cylindrical member, a retaining bar or the like interconnects the two ends of the cylindrical member and extends over and engages the hair. This type of device allows the curler to hang loose in relation to the head and also is quite unwieldy and requires considerable time and experience in using effectively. Accordingly, it is the primary object of the present invention to provide a hair curling device on which the hair may be rolled and which will securely retain itself in position with the hair in taut condition thereon without employing any external fastening devices.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hair curler incorporating in its construction a generally cylindrical hollow `body consisting of two sections resiliently held together whereby the hair may be wrapped around the exterior surface of the cylindrical member until the cylindrical member is disposed adjacent the scalp surface after which the end portions of the two sections may be drawn outwardly while the abutting ends of the two sections are forced inwardly whereby the inner edges of the abutting edges of the sections are spread apart for receiving the hair adjacent the scalp after which the ends of the sections are released with a spring resiliently gripping the hair adjacent the scalp between the abutting ends of the sections of the cylindrical member thereby securely retaining `the cylindrical member in position.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hair curler incorporating a brush construction therein which also facilitates the rolling of the hair onto the cylindrical member and retains the hair evenly spread throughout the length of the cylindrical mem-ber.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a hair curler which is simple in construction, easy to use, effective for its particular purposes and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective View of the head of a person employing the hair curlers of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 2 2 of FIGURE 1 illustrating the hair curlers in plan View and illustrating the manner in which the hair adjacent the scalp is gripped by the sections of the cylindrical mem-ber;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the hair curler;
FIGURE 4 is a longitudinal, sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 4 4 of FIGURE 3 illustrating the details of construction of the invention; and K FIGURE 5 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 5 5 of FIGURE 4 illustrating further structural details of the hair curler.
Referring now specically to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the hair curler of the present invention for rolling hair 12 thereon to a position adjacent the scalp surface 14 of the head 16 of a person employing the hair curlers. Each hair curler 10 includes a gener-ally cylindrical hollow member 18 which includes two cylindrical hollow sections 20 and 22. The cylindrical sections 20 and 22 normally abut each other along a peripheral center line 24. The cylindrical section 20 is provided with an end cap 26 while the cylindrical section 22 is provided with an end cap 28.
An elongated coil spring 30 extends between the end caps 26 and 28 and the terminal ends thereof are attached to U-shaped anchors 32 embedded in the end plates 26 and 28 respectively whereby the spring 30 is in the form of a tension spring for retaining the sections 20 and 22 in alignment and in abutting engagement at the line of juncture 24. While the spring 30 normally retains the cylindrical sections 20 and 22 in alignment, it does permit limited pivoting of lthe sections 20 and 22 in relation to each other about the periphery of the line of juncture 24 when lateral pressure is exerted on the ends of the cylindrical sections 20 and 22 while holding the adjacent ends thereof stationary.
Each of the cylindrical sections 20 and 22 is provided with a plurality of peripheral arcuate or spiral slots 34 through which brush bristles 36 project. The bristles 36 have the inner ends thereof secured to a twisted wire 38 which is conventional brush structure. The bristles 36 extend out through the entire area of the slots 34 which are separated by longitudinal reinforcement members 40 for retaining the walls of the cylindrical sections 20 and 22 in substantially a rigid manner. As illustrated, an independent brush assembly including the twisted wire 38 and the bristles 36 is provided for the cylindrical sections 20 and 22 whereby the brush assembly will not interfere with the pivotal movement of the sections 20 and 22 in relation to each other.
In using the present invention, the cylindrical member or roller will be wound into a lock of hair until it is wound up tight to the scalp surface 14. At this point, the beauty operator will bend the ends of the cylindrical member away from the scalp as he at the same time presses the center towards the scalp. This bending force causes the line of juncture 24 where the two body sections 20 and 22 come together to open towards the scalp surface and allow the hair at the scalp to enter between the adjacent ends of the body sections 20 and 22. When the bending pressure is released by the operator, the spring 30 brings the cylindrical body sections 20 and 22 back together thus pinching the hair at the scalp and retaining the cylindrical member in the desired position at the scalp without the use of external fastening devices such as clips or pins.
The cylindrical member and the end caps may be conveniently constructed of plastic material and the brush may be of conventional construction and it is within the purview of the present invention to mount brush bristles on the exterior surface of the cylindrical member for convenience of retaining the hair spread evenly along the longitudinal length of the curler.
The foregoing is considered a-s illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled inthe art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is `claimed as new is as follows:
