UNITED STATES PATENT orricE.
HERTHA STEINACI-IER,' OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-GURLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. February 16, 1920. Serial No. 359,084.
' reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side View ofthe invention, partly in section and on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention bent into form for use.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a modification partly broken away, the device being shown as bent into form for use. 7
Fig. 4 is a side view of this modification partly broken away before being bent into form.
The invention has relation to hair curlers, having for its object to provide an improved device for holding the hair in curl, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth. I V
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates an elongated resilient member or body formed of spring wire helically coiled, and 3 is a wrapping or cover for said spring consisting of chamois skin or other soft material, the ends of said wrapping being turned into the hollow ends of the springs at 4;, 4.
One end of the device is provided with a plug 5 of wood or other rigid material, fitting in the hollow end of the spring and extending without the same, said plug being adapted to engage closely the opposite hollow end of the spring which forms a seat 6 therefor when the body or spring is bent upon itself into annular form, thereby holding the spring in such form. V
A modification of the invention is shown in Figs. 3 and 4: of the drawings, wherein the body of the device is formed of an elongatedsoft rubber member 2 of circular or rounded form in cross section, provided at one end with a seat or recess 6 and at its other end with a reduced prolongation or projection 5 of rigid material adapted to engage closely said seat to hold the device in annular form when bent upon itself.
The body of the device is of any suitable diameter according to the diameter of the curl desired, and in use the hair iscurled therearound, and this being done, the device is bent upon itself into annular form and the projection or plug inserted into the seat at the opposite end of the device or spring, where it will be held by the inherent elasticity of the spring or body endeavoring to assume its normal straight form, this tendency being resisted by the rigid plug or projection binding against its seat.
In this way the hair may be quickly curled and held in curl, and upon pulling the projection or plug from its seat the spring or body will assume its normal straight form and may then be withdrawn from the curl. Of course the hair would Patented July 20, 1920.
be held in curl for a suflicient length of time, as overnight, before disengaging the device from the curl.
The ends of the device are designed to be brought into contact, so that in use a perfectly smooth annulus is provided, with no irregularities liable to become entangled in the hair. The same advantage is obtained in the unfastening operation, owing to the plug and seat engagement.
I claim A hair curler, consisting of an elongated coil of resilient wire of normally straight form and having an end provided with a reentrant longitudinal recess, and an opposite longitudinal projection of rigid material adaptedfor engagement with said recess to hold said coil in annular form, and a cover for said coil of wire.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERTHA STEIN AOHER.
