Description

Patented Dec. 9, 1941 UNITED STATES f st-TENT 0F FI CFE HAIR CURLER.
Adolph Reiter, New York, N. Y.
Application December 4, 1940, Serial No. 368,420
"9 Claims.
This invention relates to hair curlers and has for its principal object to provide a construction which will be not only-simple and cheap to manufa'ctureb'ut which can be used, even while sleeping, without causing any discomfort to the user.
The hitherto u'sed hair curlers are made either wholly or partly of metal and have the disadvantage that pressure is "caused on the head of the user due to the stiffness of the materials of said curlers.
To accomplish my object and thereby obviate the disadvantages of said old curlers, I construct my curler so that soft material for all parts thereof can be used.
In the accompanying drawing which constitutes part of this specification and in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of my curler.
Figure 2 is a cross section on line 22 of Fig, 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a modified construction of the curler, and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of another modification.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, first to the modification shown in Figs. 1 and 2, my new hair curler comprises a cylindrical member ID made of soft, flexible material, such as soft rubber, sponge rubber or the like. This member may be either tubular with open or closed ends, or solid. Attached with both ends to said member, is a resilient element ll, of soft flexible material, such as an elastic cord or the like, which extends longitudinally over the outer face of said member I0. In the present embodiment the attachment of said elastic cord is obtained by passing the ends thereof through holes Illa of said member and knotting the same inside said member as at Ila. This element II is adapted to engage and clamp the hair between itself and the member I0 as shown in the drawing. Suitably attached to one end of said member I0 is a loop l2 of elastic material or the like which is capable of engaging a notch or notches 10b provided in the opposite end of said member. Said 100p when stretched longitudinally over said member and snapped into a notch lob will fasten the curler in curling position to the hair of the user.
In the modification shown in Figure 3, instead of an elastic cord, a clamping tongue or flap l3 of soft flexible material such as soft rubber is used. This tongue is permanently attached to the member at one end only and extends freely longitudinally over the outer face of said member. The attachment thereof may be effected by gluing or in any other suitable manner. This tongue or fiap is adapted to -frictionally engage and clamp the hair between itself and the member 'I'O when the hair is wound around the same. In other respects the construction may be the same as in the first modification.
In Figure 4 the body of the member Ill" is made to widen towards its ends as at 10 1 0 whereby the displacement of the hair curled around said member will be prevented from sliding off the same.
Suitable means may be used for shortening the loop l2 for greater tightness, to cause the flexible member to assume a curved shape if such be desired. Such means may be a bead adjustably strung on the loop as shown. The free end l2b of the loop may serve as a handle.
The body of the flexible member may be perforated as at I0 for causing quick drying.
In use the hair of the user is passed either between the elastic cord and flexible member ID or between the flap l3 and said member, then wound around the same as many times as desired. The loop I2 is then stretched longitudinally over the member I and snapped into a notch Illb of the latter thereby fastening the curler to the hair of the user.
Various changes may be made in the construction of my device without departing from the principle of my invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to the details described and shown.
What I claim is:
1. In a hair curler the combination of a member widening towards the ends of soft flexible material, a clamping element of soft material fixed to said member and extending longitudinally over the outer face thereof, said clamping member being adapted to clamp the hair between itself and said member, elastic means fixed at one end to said flexible member for fastening the curler in curling position to the hair of the user, means at the opposite end of said flexible member for engaging said elastic means and means on said elastic means to vary the tension of said elastic means.
2. In a hair curler the combination of a perforated member of soft flexible material, a clamping element of soft material fixed to said member and extending longitudinally over the outer face thereof, said clamping member being adapted to clamp the hair between itself and said member,
55 elastic means fixed at one end to said flexible member for fastening the curler in curling position to the hair of the user, means at the opsite end of said flexible member for engaging said elastic means and means on said elastic means to vary the tension of said elastic means.
3. In a hair curler of the character described, a cylindrical body formed at one end with Wedge shaped incisions extending longitudinally from the edge thereof, a hair clamping element attached to said body and extending longitudinally over the outer face thereof, and an elastic loop for fastening the curler in active position, said loop being attached to the opposite end of said body and when stretched longitudinally adapt ed to pass into said incisions and to be tightly held thereby in its stretched condition and means for varying the tension of the elastic element.
4. In a hair curler of the character described, a tubular body formed at one end with. wedge shaped incisions extending longitudinally from the edge thereof, a hair clamping tongue attached at one end to said'body and extending longitudinally over the outer face thereof, an elastic loop for fastening the curler in active position, said loop being attached to the opposite end of said body and when stretched longitudinally adapted to pass into said incisions and thereby held in its stretched condition and means for varying the tension of the elastic element.
, 5. In a hair curler of the character described, a flexible body, a flexible hair'clamping element attached to said body and extending longitudinally over the outer face thereof, an elastic element for fastening the curler in active position, said element being attached to one end of said body and when stretched longitudinally adapted to engage the opposite end of said body and there-- by retained in its stretched condition and means adjustably borne by said elastic element for varying the tension of the latter.
6. In a hair curler of the character described, a flexible body, a flexible hair clamping element attached to said flexible body and extending 1ongitudinally over the outer face thereof, an elastic element for fastening said curler in active position, said element being attached to one end of said body and when stretched longitudinally adapted to engage the opposite end of said body and be retained thereby in stretched condition and a member adjustably borne on said elastic. element for varying the tension of the latter.
7. In a hair curler of the character described, a body of liquid retaining material, a flexible hair clamping element attached to said body and means on said body for fastening said curler in active position.
3. .In a hair curler of the character described, a body of sponge rubber, a hair clamping element attached to said body and extending'longitudinally over the outer face thereof, and an element for fastening said curler in active position, said element being attached to one end of said body and adapted to engage the opposite end of said body and be retained thereby.
9. In a hair curler of the character described, a. cylindrical body having laterally flaring ends, a hair clampingelement attached to said body, one of said flaring ends having wedge shaped incisions extending longitudinally from the edge thereof, and an elastic loop for fastening the curler in active position,'said loop being attached to the opposite end of said body and when stretched longitudinally adapted to engage said incisions and be retained thereby in stretched condition.
