Description

body of the curler, the hair being wound PATENT Patented June 23, 1903.
OFFICE.
MARGUERITE I. CONNELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-C RIM PER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 31,861, dated June 23, 1903. Application filed Decemher 26,19 (12 Serial No. 136,641. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGUERITE I. CON- NELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hair-Curler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a hair-curler having a pliable body made of soft rubber-for example, in spiral formand an elastic retaining device in the form of a tie or locking loop or an equivalent device capable of extending practically from one end of the body to theother for the purpose of retaining thehair in position upon the around the body, whereby to impart to the hair a peculiar wave when the device is removed.
Another purpose of the invention is to con. struct a device for curling or producing a waved effect in the human hair which is used without heating and which will not particularly incommode or cause discomfort to the wearer during repose.
The invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,
and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device, the retaining member being shown in clamping position. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the device, the parts being in the position illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view illustratingone mannerin which the retaining member may be attached to the body of the device.
The device consists, primarily, of the body 1 member A and the retaining member B, carried by the body member. These parts are made of a pliable elastic materialsoft rubber, for example.
The body A is provided with a spirallyformed surface 10, extending practically from one end to the other; but preferably the terminals of the body are in the form of cylindrical heads 11 and 12. The retaining device B preferably consists of an elastic band oran elastic material in loop form. This retaining device is attached usually to one head-section of the body Athe head 11, for instance-and maybe secured to the body in any approved manner.
As the retaining member may become inefiective by constant use, it is desirable that it should be so attached to the body A that under such conditions it can be conveniently substituted by another member at any time. Therefore in Fig. 3 I have shown the head'- section 11 of the body as provided with a longitudinal aperture or opening 13, in which the members of a cotter-pin 14: are introduced and the cotter-pin is held in position by the natural spreading of its members, while the head of the cotter-pin extends beyond the said head 11 of the body. The retaining device when in the form of a band is slipped between the members of the-cotter-pin before the pin is introduced. If the retainingdevice is in string form, its ends can be attached conveniently to the head of the cotter-pin. I
desire it to be understood, however, that the retaining member B may be secured to the body in any desired way-as, for example, an eye may be securely attached to an end of the body to receive one portion of the retainingm'ember. Theretainingmemberis adapted to be drawn in direction, for example, of the head 12 and to pass over the said head to an engagement with a keeper 15, which keeper may form an integral portion of the body and constitutes practically a teat projection from the said end 12, as illustrated. When the retaining device B is made to extend from one end of the body to the other, it extends longitudinally of the spiral section 10, as is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
In applying the device the hair is wound around the spiral portion or section of the device, and then the retaining member 13 is carried to an engagement with the hair wound on the body and to a connection with the opposing head of the body. When the device is to be removed, the retaining member B is slipped from its connection with the head 12, and the said body may then be readily screwed out from the hair or the hair may be loosened and the said device then conveniently and quickly drawn therefrom.
This device will impart a waved eifect to the hair and can be quickly and conveniently applied and removed. When worn during repose, it will not interfere with the comfort of the wearer to the extent incident to the use of a hard curling device of rigid material and will impart to the hair a peculiar and very desirable wave.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A hair-curler consisting of a body constructed of soft rubber provided with a helical groove extending substantially from end to end, a retaining member consisting of an elastic loop attached to one end of the said body, and a keeper at the opposite end of the body, adapted to be engaged by the said retaining member when said member is carried from one end of the body to the other for the purpose of holding the hair in place on the body, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARGUERITE I. OONNELL.
