Description

Jun 24, 1947. v 5. A. BRoYLEs HAIR CURLER Filed March 7, 1946 ril ` Inventor Grace A. rodvies- By QM 9 nap WWWW Patented June 24, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR CURLER Grace A. Broyles, Kenosha, Wis.
Application March '7, 1946, Serial No. 652,655
Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in hair curlers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, in which the hair is wound upon a novel structure of flexible straps and resilient strips, the same being bent upon one another and releasably secured by snap-on fasteners, for the purpose of securely holding and curling the hair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a curler which, by virtue of the construction outlined in the preceding paragraph, is simple and eiective in operation, pleasing in appearance, and comfortable in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a curler in which the use of hinges, attachments, or the like, is eliminated and in which the possibility of the hair becoming tangled or caught in the curler is entirely avoided. Furthermore, there are no metal edges or sharp extremities such as are frequently found in curlers of conventional design, which tend to cut or otherwise injure the hair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a curler which may be readily applied to or removed from the hair, yet which, when once applied, will remain in position for considerable periods of time, without any adjustment being necessary to safeguard the efliciency and the satisfactory functioning thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a curler which is applicable with equal efficiency to both thin and heavy strands of hair.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hair curler which is simple in construction and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture,
An additional object of the invention is to provide a curler which cannot easily become damaged.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the same in the open position;
Figure 2 is a further perspective View, showing the same partially closed;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional View, taken in the plane of the line 4--4 in Fig.` 3, and
p teria] possessing suitable frictional qualities.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view, taken in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are used to designate ike parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a ilexible strap designated generally by the reference character I0, the same comprising a length of bendable wire forming an elongated frame II.
This frame is positioned in a covering of suitable material such as fabric, or preferably, as shown in the drawings, by a covering of kid leather I2. Suitable packing material such as the cotton I3 is placed around the frame II and the covering I2 is suitably closed by the lines of stitching I4.
A resilient strip I5 is secured to one side of the strap I0 by the stitch lines I5, this strip being formed from rubber or similar other ma- A portion I1 of the strip I5 extends beyond the adjacent end of the strap Ill and a resilient reinforcing element, such as a length of flexible wire I8, is provided on this extended portion, in order to prevent the same from ceiling or otherwise losing its substantially fiat character. It should be noted that the wire I8 may be attached to the portion I'I in any suitable manner, such as is exemplified in the accompanying drawings by the detents I9.
A pair of coacting snap-on fasteners 20, 2l are provided adjacent the ends of the strap IU and a further pair of coacting fasteners 22, 23 are positioned adjacent the extended end of the portion I1 and medially the length of the strip I 5, respectively. It should be noted the fastener 23 extends through the strap I0 as well as the strip I5, as is best illustrated in the accompanying Figure 3.
When the invention is placed in use, the device is opened as shown in Figure 1, whereupon a strand of hair may be wound upon the portion of the curler between the fastener 23 and the bend 24 in the strap I5. The portion I'I is now folded over the hair as is best shown in Figure 2, and the fasteners 22, 23 are engaged.
Thereupon, the curler as a whole is doubled in order that the fastener 20 may engage the fastener 2| and it will be noted that the hair will thus be firmly and securely held while setting.
The curlerrmay be readily removed from the hair by simply reversing the operations above set forth and while only the general manner of securing the hair in the curler has been above described, it should be understood that the hair may be arranged in various formations and strands, such as would curl the hair in long or short Waves, in the croquignole curl, or the like.
Alternatively. the extended portion I1 may be used oily for clamping the ends of the hair, whereupon the fasteners 22, 23 may be engaged and the strand wound upon the curler as shown in Figure 2,n before the fasteners 2U, 2l are corinected. However, it is presumed that the various applications of the curler will readily present themselves when the same is placed in use and accordingly, further explanation thereof is oonsidered unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to lbe understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the7 invention as claimed- What I Claim as my invention is-:
l. A hai-r Curie-r comprising in combination, a flexible strap and a resilient strip secured thereto, said strip extending 'beyond one enel of said strap, releasable means for fastening the exe tended end of said strip to mediall'y the length of the saine,- and further releasabl'e means for securing together the ends of saidstrap.
2. A hair curler comprising in combination, a flexible strap and a resilient strip secured to one side thereof, a portion of said strip extending beyond the adjacent end of said strap, coacting snap-on fasteners medially the length of said strip and adjacent the extended end thereof, and further coacting' snap-on fasteners adjacent the ends of said strap.
3. The device as defined in claim 2, in which s aidexilole strap comprises in combination, a flexible wire forming an elongated frame, covern ing material on said frame, and padding inside of said covering material.
42 The device as defined in claim 2 together With a resilient reinforcing element on the extended portion of said strip.
5. A hair curler comprising in combination, a strap comprising a exible Wire forming an elongated frame, covering material on said frame, and padding inside of said covering material, a rubber str-ip secured to one side of said strap, a portion of said vstripl extending beyond thev adjacent end of said strap, a resi-lient reinforcing ele merit on the extended portion of said strip, coactiig; snap-ori fasteners medi-ally the length of said- 'stiip and adjacent the extended er'idy theren of, and further enacting snap-on fasteners adjad Gel-it thel ends of said strapa- GRAC'E A.
