1 Claim. (Cl. 132-42) This invention relates to an improved and novel hair rewaving device. It is desirable to have a device which can remove an excessively curly or kinky condition from hair, such as may result naturally or from a permanent wave, and replace it in a single operation with a soft wave of appreciable length.

it is an object therefore of this invention to provide a novel and improved hair rewaving device which can replace an excessively curled or kinky condition in hair with a soft wave of appreciable length in a single operation.

it is another object of this invention to provide a device having a member about which hair is wound under tension, and means for holding said member in a fixed position on a persons scalp.

It is a further object of this invention to provide a device for replacing a tightly curled or kinky condition in hair with a soft wave of appreciable length comprising a spindle about which hair is wound under tension and a clamping member for holding said spindle in a fixed position in relation to the hair wound thereabout.

It is more specifically an object of this invention to provide a device for rewaving tightly curled or kinky hair to produce a soft wave comprising a tubular member having a diameter of appreciable width and a member having spaced portions extending longitudinally of said tubular member adjacent opposite sides thereof, a portion connecting said spaced portions at one end and being rotatably secured to one end of said tubular member and a portion connecting said spaced portions at their other end, and means for holding said last mentioned portion in fixed position at said other end.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a device having in combination, a tubular member having a journal at one end and a plurality of diametrically aligned grooves at the other end, a clamping member having portions extending longitudinally of said tubular member at opposite sides thereof, a portion at one end of said clarnping member rotatably secured on said journal and a portion at the other end of said clamping member adapted to be disposed in any of said grooves whereby said clamping member is held in locked position on said tubular member.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:

Referring to the drawings, applicants device is shown comprising a spindle 10. Said spindle may be formed as a cylinder or may be tubular having an appreciable diameter. In the embodiment of the invention here illustrated, said member 10 is disclosed as being tubular. Said member in may be formed of any suitable material, such as metal, a composition of paper or plastic. Said member ii) is here disclosed as being made of plastic material. Said member l0 has a closed end portion 19a and an open end portion 1%. Extending outwardly of said end portion 10a axially of said member 10 and tapering towards its outer end is a journal lfic. Said journal is shown as having a portion of reduced diameter at its inner end forming a groove liitl adjacent said portion 16a. Circumferentially spaced about said end portion 18b and extending longitudinally for some distance about the outer side of said member it) are a plurality of grooves file. Extending diametrically across said end 1% are a plurality of grooves 19 A clamping member 11 is provided. In the embodiment of the invention here illustrated, said clamping member is disclosed as being made of a resilient and flexible plastic material. Said clamping member 11 comprises side portious 11a and 11b extending longitudinally of said member ill adjacent opposite sides thereof. Said .members and 11!) are connected at one end by an end portion lie having portions adapted to be disposed in any of said grooves 1th diametrically across said end 1%. Said members 11a and lib are connected at their other end by a hub portion 110. adapted to be removably disposed over said journal 1%.: and rotatable thereabout axially of said member 1%.

In operation, the operator will apply applicants device to portions of a persons hair. Said hair will first be prepared by having applied thereto a solution such as is commonly used with hair waving devices.

Said clamping member is made of flexible material and is easily bent to one side of said member it), leaving member 10 unobstructed. The operator will grasp said member 10 about its grooved end portion 10;: with one hand. With the other hand the operator will take a portion of a persons hair to which said solution has been applied and will wind said hair spirally about said member 1% by rotating said member as said hair is held under a considerable amount of tension. Said hair will be wound about said member 1% until said member it? is adjacent the scalp of said person. It is also necessary that there be considerable tension on said persons hair between the scalp of said person and said member it Said clamping member 11 is then placed in operating position about said member 10 and having its end portion 11c engaging any of the diametrically alined grooves 10 Said member i1 will thus be locked in position circumferentially of said member 10 and said member 10 will be held in fixed position adjacent said persons scalp.

It is essential that said member 1% be formed having an appreciable width so that when said persons hair is wound thereabout an excessively curly or kinky condition in said hair will be removed by being under tension about said member 1% and will be replaced by a soft wave of appreciable length formed about said member It is seen that the length of said wave will be determined by the width of said member 143. The action of applicants device also tends to remove any curly or kinky condition which may be present in the hair adjacent a persons scalp.

After a suitable length of time has elapsed, applicants device will be removed and a soft wave of appreciable length will be present in said persons hair replacing a previously curly or kinky condition.

A-modification of applicants device is shownin Fig. 6 in which member 10' is provided. Said mem'berlll) is substantially identical in structure to said member 10 except that in place of said portion 10C there is provided an opening itiC having a diameter of reduced dimension. 7

A clamping member 51' is provided which is sub stantially identical in structure to said clamping, member a 11 with the exception that in place of said hub portion 7 as that previously described.

Applicants device has been thoroughly tested in practice and has produced very satisfactory results. Ap-

plicants device may be used with hair which has naturally a tight curled or kinky condition or with hair which has resulted in any of these conditions from a process such as permanent waving.

It will of course be understood that various changes maybe made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

A hair rewaving device having in combination, a cylindrical member having a unitary imperforate surface and being of appreciable uniform diameter, the material thereof being sufiiciently rigid to retain said uniformity of diameter under the tension of hair wound tightly thereabout, a hub extending outwardly of one end of said cylindrical member, a plurality of longitudinal circumferentially spaced grooves of short length about the other end portion of said cylindrical member, a plurality of diametric grooves extending across said other end of said cylindrical member, a flexible clamping member substantially rectangular in form having'side portions extending longitudinally of said cylindrical member, an end portion journaled on said hub, and the other end of said clamping member being resiliently engageable with said diametric grooves.
