e'olaims. (cr me-+33) The present invention relates to an improve- -ment in a hair curler.

Many forms of hair curlers are knownin the art and the simpler forms thereof comprise a spool about which a strand of hair is wound to form a curl. These curlers are provided with. a

retaining member for retaining the curl in its wound position upon the spool. The main use of such curlers is for forming and retaining a wound curl of hair for subsequent treatment to impart a permanent wave to the strand of hair. In one device of the prior art known to me, the retaining member consists of a rubber band fixed to one end of the spool and provided at its other end with an opening adapted to fit over a projection formed at the other end of the spool. In another known prior art device a cord or string is fixed at one end to one end of the spool with the other end of the spool being slotted so that the cord may be draw taut and fixed in the slotted end of the spool retaining the curl in wound position upon the spool. However, both of the retaining members of the devices referred to are quite flexible and do not satisfactorily serve their intended purpose.

According to my. invention, I propose to provide a spool, a spring retaining member, and means providing for frictionally securing the spring member to opposite ends of the spool. The leaf spring member preferably is constructed of material of suflicient strength to adequately hold the wound curl, and provides for frictional engagement of the parts to retain them in assembled position. In a preferred embodiment of my invention the spring member is of leaf form and constructed of wood so that a satisfactory curler may be provided without utilizing present critical materials. It will be understood however that the parts may be made of metal, plastic, or other suitable material.

It is an object of my invention, therefore, to provide a hair curler comprising a spool, a leaf spring member, and means for frictionally retaining the leaf spring member in detachable relation to the spool. More specifically it is an object to provide a spool having enlarged flanges at opposite ends thereof provided with slots for receiving the ends of the curl retainnig leaf spring member to frictionally retain the latter in assembled relation with respect to the spool. If desired each of the inner surfaces of the end flanges of the spool may be provided with a plurality of slots affording a plurality of positions in which the leaf spring member may be fric- I tionally :retained in assembled relation .with i respect to the spool. Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a spool 6 comprising an elongated substantially cylindrical portion 1 having enlarged flange members 8, preferably annular in form to facilitate manipulation of the spool in winding a strand of hair into a curl thereon. In the embodiment of the invention shown the spool 6 is made of wood and the annular end flanges 8 are formed integral with the spool. A pair of slots 9 are formed in the inner surface of each of the annular flange members 8 and extend transversely of the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical portion of the spool. A leaf spring retaining member ID is formed with a reduced intermediate portion H and tapered end portions I2.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, a strand of hair It has been wound upon the spool beginning with the free end of the strand toward the scalp of the person. Upon completion of the winding of the strand of hair upon the spool the leaf spring member I0 is adapted to be inserted by movement transversely of the longitudinal axis of the substantially cylindrical portion 1 by inserting the tapered ends l2 into opposed slots 9 of the annular end flanges 8. It will be observed from Figures 1 and 3 that the spring retaining member 10 will be slightly bowed by the wound curl and the ends IE will engage the walls defining the slots 9 to frictionally retain the leaf spring member ID in assembled relation with respect to the spool 6. A hair curler comprising a spool about which a strand of hair is adapted to be wound to form a curl having enlarged flange members at its opposite ends, said flange members having opposed aligned slots extending thereinto from the inner surfaces thereof, a resilient leaf member overlying said spool and within the ends of said flange members for retaining the curl in wound position upon the spool, said leaf member being adapted to be bowed outwardly away from said spool upon engagement with the wound curl providing for frictional engagement of the opposite ends of said member with the walls defining the opposed slots in said flanges to detachably retain the leaf member and spool in assembled relation.

A hair curler comprising a spool about which a strand of hair is adapted to be wound having annular end members of greater diameter than the diameter of the spool, said annular end bars, a resilient leaf member overlying said spool and within the annular end members for retaining the curl in wound position upon the spool, said leaf member being adapted to be bowed outwardly away from said spool upon engagement with the Wound curl providing for frictional engagement of the ends of said leaf member with the walls defining the opposed slots in said annular end members to detachably retain the leaf member and spool in assembled relation.
