Application December 30, 1957, Serial No. 705,988 l 10 Claims. (Cl. 13242) This invention relates to permanent waving rods and more particularly relates to such rods of the type having an elastic cord which extends along the rod exterior and is anchored adjacent the opposite ends of the rod to hold the hair which is wound on the rod.

An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cold permanent Wave rod of simple and inexpensive construction and operation.

Another object of my invention is to provide a novel permanent wave rod which has an elastic hair-clamping element which is normally in a completely out-of-the-Way position when the hair is being wound on the rod, but which is readily accessible for extension along the rod exterior to hold the hair thereagainst.

A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved permanent wave rod into which the elongated elastic hair-clamping element is normally completely retracted to prevent hair from becoming entangled therewith when the hair is wound on the rod and subsequently the hair-clamping element is movable into hairclamping position on the exterior of the rod.

A further object of my invention is to provide a completely reversible permanent wave rod with the elastic hair-clamping element being available at both ends so vthat regardless of how the rod is oriented when the hair is wound thereon, the clamping element may be moved into operative hair-clamping position in a manner to suit the convenience of the operator.

These and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views and in which:

Fig. 1 is an elevation View of the hair curling device showing in dotted lines one mode of operation;

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on a plane as indicated substantially at 2 2 in Fig. 1 and showing in dotted lines a second alternative mode of operation;

Fig. 3 is an elevation view of the left end of the hair curling device as seen in Fig. l;

Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a modified form of the invention; and

Fig. 5 is a left end elevation view of the tform of the invention shown in Fig. 4.

The form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 comprises an elongated, rigid body member which is constructed of molded plastic in the form shown, but which might be constructed of any suitable material that would not be eected by permanent waving solution. The body 10 has an elongated passage 11 extending longitudinally therethrough and through the opposite ends thereof. A plurality of transverse apertures 12 provide communication between the passage 11 and the exterior surface of the body member.

The passage 11 is enlarged at 13 and 14 to define a pair of seating portions or annular surfaces 15a and 15b adjacent the opposite ends of the body member.

rl'he invention also includes a hair-clamping element 2,896,638 Patented July 28, 1959 which is indicated in general by numeral 16 and which has an elongated llexible and elastic intermediate portion 17 constructed, in the form shown, of a strip of rubber which is of such a nature as to be highly elastic and capable of withstanding the various solutions used in permanent waving. Interengaging anchoring devices are provided at each end of the hair-clamping element, and in the form shown, such devices include a rigid, outwardly projecting sleeve 18 at one end of the elastic element 17, and a rigid, outwardly projecting receptacle 19 having a hollow interior 20 at the other end of the elastic element 17. The elastic element 17 extends through the rigid sleeve 18, and has an enlarged head portion 21 which is substantially larger than the interior opening of sleeve 18 so as to prevent the elastic element from pulling out of the sleeve 18 and to thereby eiiect a substantially permanent connection between the rubber strip 17 and the sleeve 18.

The other end of the rubber strip 17 projects through an aperture in the bottoml 19a of the receptacle 19, and is knotted at 22 to prevent pulling out of the receptacle 19. It is preferable to employ a substantiallyannular and rigid split ring 23 vfor tightly encircling the rubber strip 17 and bearing against the inner side of the receptacle bottom 19a. The split ring 23 provides for removing of the rubber from the receptacle 19 and allowing the rubber to be entirely removed and replaced.

It is to be particularly noted that the hair-clamping element 16 is substantially confined within the body member 10, and that the end portions or interengaging

18 and 19 project endwise outwardly a distance which is sufficient only to be manually gripped. The length of the elastic element or rubber strip 17 is such as to continuously draw the

14 and 13 of the passage 11 and into engagement with the seating surfaces 15 and 16, and it will be seen therefore that the elastic element 17 is continuously under tension.

The rigid sleeve 18 and the `receptacle 19 are. interittable with each other. The sleeve 18 is projectible into the interior opening 20 of the receptacle 19.

In operation, it will be noted that the hair-clamping element is coniined substantially completely in the body member 1l) while the hair is being wound on the body member. When winding of the hair is completed either the sleeve 18 or the receptacle 19 will be manually gripped an'd pulled out of the end of the body member and the elastic element 17 will be stretched and turned back along the exterior olf the body member in hair-clamping relation. The

18 and 19 will be interitted with eachother, and depending upon which end had been pulled out of the body member, the receptacle 19 may be fitted onto the sleeve 18 as seen in Fig. l in dotted lines, or the rigid projecting sleeve 18 may be fitted into the receptacle 19 as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2. It will therefore be seen that the operator may merely pick up the curling device and apply it to the hair without regard to orienting of the curling device, and the hair-clamping element may be withdrawn from the end which is most convenient so as to lock the hair in clamping relation. Furthermore, because the hair-clamping element is conined wholly within the body member 10, the hair will not become ensnarled with the rubber.

In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the body member 39 is shaped similarly to that previously described and has a longitudinally extending passage 31 therethrough. The passage 31 may be enlarged at 32 to provide a recessed seat 33 against which the split ring 34 is seated to hold the knotted end 35 from passing through the passage 31. The other end of the elastic element 36 is enlarged at 37 to be prevented from entering the passage 31.

It will be noted that the body member 30 has a number of diametrically aligned recesses 3S formed in the end thereof to receive and anchor the free end portion 37 of the hair-.clamping element when the same-is Pulled out .of .the body member vand ,turned back along the exteriorof .the .body member in hair-clamping relation, 4substantially as shown in dotted lines ,in Fig. 4. In this form of the invention .the elastic element is `Continuously -under tension so that ,no portion of the elastic element dangleS out of the body member Iwhen hair is ,being wound-thereon.

It 'will be seen that I have provided a new `and improved hair curling .device wherein the iiexible and elastic hair-clamping element is normally confined substantially completely within the body member to prevent hair from becoming yentangled therewith when hair .is wound on the .body member. It should further be noted `that in one forni of the invention the hair-clamping .element has anchoring devices, either of which may be pulled from a respective .end of the `body member for anchoring engagement with the other end thereof.

It Iwill, Lof course, .be understood that various changes may be made in the form, detail, arrangement and proportion of the parts without departing from the scope of my .invention which consists of the matter described herein and set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

l. yA hair-.curling device comprising an `elongated body member upon which hair is .to be wound, said body me1nber having first and second end portions ,and also ,having a longitudinally extending passage therein, lsaid lpassage opening in an endwise direction at said first end portion, an .elongated hair-clamping element in the passage and having inner and .outer terminal portions and also having an elastic and llexible intermediate portion, said inner terminal portion of the hair .clamping element being spaced from said first end of the body member and anchored in the passage in stationary relation to the body member, the outer terminal portion of .the `element projecting out of said iirst .end portion of the ,body member a distance suiicient to facilitate manual gripping thereof, means on the body member at said first end portion cooperatively constructed and arranged in relation to the outer 4terminal portion of the hair-clamping element for anchoring the outer terminal portion of the hair-clamping element and preventing retraction thereof into the .passage, additional means `on the body member spaced longitudinally along the exterior thereof from said -iirst end portion and cooperatively constructed and arranged in relation to the outer terminal portion of the hair-clamping element for releasably anchoring the outer terminal portion .of `the hair clamping element to hold the intermediate elastic portion along the exterior of the body member in hairclamping relation thereto, the intermediate elastic portion of the hair yclamping element being dimensioned to be under tension continuously to be normally fully retracted in the passage with only the outer terminal portion .projecting slightly from the body member, whereby to prevent hair from becoming entangled with vthe hairclamping element when hair is being wound on the body member.

A hair-curling device comprising an elongate body member upon which hair 'is lto be wound, said body member having opposite end y:portions `and having an open-ended longitudinally extending passage therein, an elongated hair-clamping element in the passage and having end portions ,disposed adjacent corresponding .end portions of the body member, said clamping element also having a flexible elastic intermediate portion which stretches to permit movement of each of the clamping element end portions outwardly from the corresponding end portion of the body member to permit the clamping element end portion to be swung back along the body member to the opposite end portion of the body member, interengageable anchoring means on the .end portions of the hair-clamping .element and on the end .portions of the body member for preventing movement of the clamping element `end portions inwardly of the .corresponding vbody member end portions vand valso releasably securing veach of the end portions of the clamping element at the `oppesite ,end portion of .the body member, ywhereby the elastic intermediate portion maybe secured along the exterior ofthe body memberin hair-clamping position Aby lmoving either end portion thereof outwardly of the body vmember and Securing said .end portion on the opposite end portion .of the body member. A hair-curling device comprising an elongate body member upon which hair is `to be wound, said body member having opposite end portions and having a longitudinally extending passage therein with open ends at said end portions, an elongated hair-clamping element in the passage and having end portions disposed adjacent corresponding end portions of the body member, said clamping element also having a flexible elastic intermediate portion which stretches to permit movement of each of the clamping element end portions outwardly from lthe corresponding end portions of the 'body member to permit the clamping element end portion to be swung back along the body member to the opposite end portion of the body member, said elastic intermediate portion being dimensioned to be continuously under tension whereby to urge the clamping element end portions in a direction inwardly of the passage ends, securing means on the end portions of the hair-clamping element and engageable with the end portions of the body member for preventing movement of the clamping element end portions inwardly of the corresponding body member end portions, and said securing means also intertting with each other in securing relation to retain the elastic intermediate portion of the clamping element along the exterior of the body member in hair-clamping relation therewith.

A hair curling device comprising an elongate body member on which hair is to be twound, said body member having opposite end portions and also having a longitudinally extending passage opening through the end portions, the ends of said passage being enlarged to dene seating surfaces, an elongated hair-clamping element inl the passage and having an elastic element continuously under tension and extending between the ends thereof and also having anchoring devices at the ends thereof seated against said surfaces and continuously urged thereagainst by the tension in said elastic element, one of said devices comprising an endwise extending projection and the other of said devices comprising an endwise opening receptacle shaped to receive and retain said projection, whereby one of said devices may be pulled outwardly from the body member to stretch the elastic element and be applied to the other of the devices .to hold the elastic element along the exterior of the body member.

A hair curling device comprising an elongate body member on which hair is to be wound, said body member having opposite end portions and having a longitudinally extending passage therein opening at least through one of said end portions, an elastic hair-clamping element having an inner end secured in the passage and having an outer end with an enlargement thereon, said elastic element being under continuous tension and said enlargement bearing against one end portion of the body member, the opposite end portion of the body member having a transverse groove at the end portion thereof for receiving the outer end of the hair-clamping element when the same is stretched and laid along the exterior of the body member for holding the hair-clamping element against the hair wound on the body member.

A hair curling device comprising a rod having first and second end portions and having a longitudinal bore extending through said first end portion, an elongated hair-clamping element in the bore and having irst and second terminal portions adjacent the corresponding end portions of 'the rod and said clamping element also having an elastic and exible intermediate portion under continuous tension and pulling said terminal portions endwise inwardly of the rod, said rst terminal portion of the clamping element being movable longitudinally outwardly from the corresponding end portion of the rod to permit the hair-clamping element to be turned back upon itself along the exterior of the rod in hair-clamping relation thereto, engaging means on the iirst terminal portion of the hair-clamping element and bearing against the first end portion of the rod to prevent complete retraction of said first terminal portion into the bore, and means carried by the second end portion of the rod for anchoring the second terminal portion of the hair-clamping element against longitudinal movement through the rod and toward said first end portion and also for releasably securing the iirst terminal portion of `the hairclamping element when the same is laid along the exlterior of the rod in hair-clamping relation.

A hair curling device comprising an elongate body member upon which hair is to be wound, said body member having opposite end portions and having a longitudinally extending passage therein with open ends at the end portions of the tbody member, an elongate hairclamping element in the passage and having end portions disposed adjacent the corresponding end portions of the body member, said clamping element also having a exible elastic intermediate portion -which stretches to permit movement of each of the clamping element end portions outwardly from the corresponding end portions of the body member to permit the clamping element end portion to [be swung back along the exterior of the body member to the opposite end portion of the body member and in hair-clamping position, means on each end of the body member for engaging the corresponding end portion of the clamping element and preventing movement thereof inwardly along the passage and also for releasably securing the opposite end portion of the clamping element when swung back along the body member in hair-clamping position, and the elastic intermediate portion of the clamping element being ldimensioned to be and being continuously under tension and thereby be normally fully retracted in the passage with only the end portions of the clamping element disposed at the end portions of the body member.
