Be it known that I, WALTER C. Gauss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates the provision of a bobbed hair curler wherein use is made of aplurality of independent curlers ar ranged in end to end relation, and associated by means of flexible connections, so that the device as an entirety, can be rolled or twisted in the hair in the proper. manner, after the ends of the hair are clamped in said rollers.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed. 7

In the drawing forming part of this ap plication, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts inthe several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the device forming the subject matter of the invention.

The device herein illustrated embodies a plurality of independent curlers, which are arranged in end to end relation, and sui ably connected together, so that the device in its entirety can be rolled or twisted in the hair in the usual Well-known manner for the purpose above stated. It is of course to be understood that the length of the device can be varied by using the greater or less number of curlers. The device is held in the hair when in use by means of strings or the like 10, which are arranged at the ends of the device as illustrated in Figure 1.

Each curler includes a tubular body portion 11 provided with a longitudinal bore 12, and these curlers are arranged in end to end relation, and connected together by means of a coiled spring 13, or any other suitable flexible element which is passed through the bores 12. Each body portion 11 is formed adjacent one end with an annu lar groove 14-, and its opposite end with openings 15 arranged at diametrically opposite points, for purposes to be presently described.

Associated with each body member 11 is a clamping element indicated at 16, and of the outline illustrated in Figure 3. This clamping element is 01 semi-cylindrical contour in cross section to correspond to the curvature of the body member 11, which it partly embraces when arranged in active position. One end of the clamping element 16 is provided with inwardly extended lugs 17 which are received by the openings 15 of the body member, in a manner which provides for pivotal movement of the clamping ele ment upon the body member. The opposite end of this clamping element is provided with oppositely curved extensions 18, projecting from the opposed sides of the clamping element, and adapted to be received by the groove 14 abovementioned. These extensions possess the desired degree of resiliency to spring over the body member 11 and hold the clamping element in clamping relation with said body member, when the device is in use.

Inv practice, the ends of the hair are passed about the body portions 11 of the various independent curlers, and the hair clamped in this position between the body portions 11 and the clamping elements 16, which when clamped in position, partly embraces the body members 11, and are held fixed relatively therethrough, through the instrument-ality oi the resilient extensions 18 arranged in the groove 15. As above stated, the independent curlers are arranged in end to end relation as illustrated in figures both 1 and 2, and are associated by means of a flexible connection of any suitable character, so that the device in its entirety can be properly flexed, and one or more of the curlers rolled or twisted independently of the adjacent curlers as the occasion may demand incident to the use of the article. I preferably make use of the coiled spring above referred to, which not only holds all the curlers associated in end to end relation, but also provides, the necessary flexible connection between the adjacent curlers. In order to prevent the hair from around the body portion inclamping being caught in the flexible connections, or otherwise entangled thereabout, a portion of the spring between the adjacent ends of the respective curlers is covered with a flexible sleeve, 21, which may be constructed from any suitable material, preferably thin rubber. After the ends ofthe hair have been clamped to the various independent curlers, the device in its entiretyis then rolled or twisted in the hair in the usual manner and retained in this position for. an appreciable length of time, by means of the strings 10 .until the hair has been properly curled. i i

What I claim is,:-

1. A haircurler or the character described comprising plurality of independent curlers arranged in end to end relati .on,and flexible connections arranged between the adjacent ends of said curlers for the purpose specified.
