Description

Jan. 2, F MAEDER DEVICE FOR USE IN WAVING OR CURLING THE HAIR Filed July 20, 1933 Patented Jan. 2, 1934 DEVICE FOR USE IN THE WAVI'NG OR CURLING HAIR Frederic Maeder, Adelaide, South Australia,
Aus
tralia Application July 2%, 1933, Serial No. 681,340, and in Australia May. 21, 1932 5 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for use in waving or curling the hair which will enable the operation to be completed in much less time and with less discomfort to the user than devices at present in use.
My device comprises three parts, namely, a curling rod upon which the hair is wrapped, the rod having a pivoted holding finger, a tongs specially constructed for holding the rod and whereby it is manipulated, and a spring clip adapted to hold the hair in place upon the rod after .it has been wrapped and to provide means for heating the hair. A separate clip is required for each rod but the one tongs may be used in conjunction with a plurality of rods and clips.
In order that my invention may be the more clearly understood, it will be described with reference to the form thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:-
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention showing the curling rod, the tongs and the holding clip, the curling rod being in place on the tongs and the tongs being partly closed.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the curling rod and of the front portion of the tongs, the rod being in place on the tongs and the tongs being open.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the tongs closed.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4i of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional plan of a clip showing a curling rod and hair in position within it.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the clip, and
Fig. '7 shows a convenient holder used to concentrate a tress of hair to facilitate its winding upon the curler.
The curling rod 1 is made of metal and is of sufficient size to enable a tress of hair to be wrapped upon it. It carries a pivoted finger 2 whereby the end of the tress may be held to ensure the retention of the same upon the rod. The rod is made preferably with its end somewhat larger than its centre, curving gradually from the ends to the centre, and it is hollow to reduce its weight. At one end of the rod is a short length 3 of uniform diameter adapted to fit into a socket 5 in the end of one member of the tongs. The end of the finger 2 is positioned in a slot cut in this end of the rod and rocks upon a pivot pin 6. That part of the finger which is behind the pivot pin is expanded into the form of a disc '7 and fits neatly into the slot but has a depth greater than that of the slot so that its edges project beyond the edges of the slot.
Rods of difierent sizes are provided to produce different sizes of curls or waves.
' The tongs 8 comprises two members 9 and 10 held together by a pin 11 after the usual or approved manner. The one member 9 has its front portion of rectangular cross section and has at such end the longitudinal tubular split socket 5 into which the end 3 of the curling rod may be inserted, the end 3 having a neat sliding fit within the socket The socket 5'is split to provide for the entrance. and movement of the disc 7. The second member 16) has its front end 12 curved inward and adapted to grip the lower edge of the disc 7. It has a groove 14 in it to ensure a positive grip. A spring 15 is secured to the member 9 and engages the upper edge of the disc 7 to return the finger to open position, when it is not otherwise held. 7
The spring clip 17 comprisestwo complementary members 18 and 19 of aluminium or other suitable material held together at abouttheir centre by a hinge pin 20 and each member has its front portion curved to form a longitudinal groove'21 so that the two together form as it were a tube, while the rear portion 22 of each is shaped to form a finger piece whereby the clip is opened, a spring 23 being arranged between the complementary members to normally hold them in closed position. The before-mentioned grooves 21 have comparatively thick walls and the face of the outer wall of one or both is ribbed or corrugated to form longitudinal channels 24 to allow air to circulate for cooling purposes. Both members of the clip 1'7 have an outer covering 25 of felt or other heat insulating material.
When in operation, prior to using the device the clip 17, and if desired the rod 1, is heated by any suitable or convenient means; for instance the rod may be heated by means of a gas jet or by inserting it into an electric coil, while the clip may be heated by hanging it to a rod heated by gas or electricity or by other known means.
A tress of hair is then isolated and so held by the wire holder 28 shown in Fig. 7. The rod 1 is then engaged in the socket 5 of the tongs which have been opened to permit such engagement. The spring 15 upon the tongmember 9, by contacting with the one edge of the disc 7 upon the end of the finger 2, causes the finger to be opened so that the end of the tress of hair may be laid between it and the body of the rod 1. The opposite or lower edge of the disc projects through the slot in the tong member 9, and upon the tongs being closed the second member 10 of the tongs pushes the disc '7 to close the finger 2 down upon the tress of hair, against the action of the spring 15 attached to the tong member 9. The rod 1 is thus firmly held in the tongs and these are manipulated to cause the hair to be wrapped upon the rod 1. The heated clip 1'7 is then opened and applied over the hair and rod 1, and the tongs 8 are released and withdrawn, leaving the rod 1 and clip 1'7 in place upon the hair where they are left until they have cooled down, whereupon the clip is removed and the hair unwound from the rod.
Having now fully described and ascertained my said invention and the manner in which it is to be performed declare that what I claim is:
1. In apparatus for use in waving or curling hair, the combination with a curling rod adapted to receive a strand of hair, of a finger pivoted on said rod and movable to clamp the hair on the rod, and a tongs having a rod supporting member and a member for operating said finger.
2. In apparatus for use in waving or curling hair, the combination with a curling rod adapted to receive a strand of hair, of a finger pivoted on said rod and movable to clamp the hair on the rod, a spring acting between said rod and finger to yieldingly urge the latter in one direction, and a tongs having a rod supporting member and a member for operating said finger to move the latter against the action of the spring to hair clamping position when the tongs is closed.
' the rod, said rod being provided adjacent one end with a slot to receive said finger, and a. tongs comprising two relatively movable members, one
of said members being recessed to receive the said end of the rod, the other of said members being positioned for engagement with said finger to operate the latter.
4. In apparatus for use in waving or curling hair, the combination with a curling rod adapted to receive a strand of hair, of a finger pivoted on said rod and movable to clamp the hair on the rod, said rod being provided adjacent one end with a slot to receive said finger, that portion of the said finger lying within the slot being enlarged to extend outwardly on either side of the rod, and a tongs comprising two relatively movable members, one of said members being recessed to receive the said end of the rod, the other of said members being positioned for en gagement with the enlarged portion of said finger to operate the latter, and a spring engaging the opposite side of the enlarged portion of the finger.
5. In apparatus for use in wavingor curling hair, the combination with a curling rod adapted to receive a strand of hair, of a finger pivoted on said rod and movable to clamp the hair on the rod, and a tongs having a rod supporting member and a member for operating said finger to hair clamping position when the tongs is' closed, said last named member being so shaped as to retain the curling rod in position on the supporting member when the tongs is closed.
