HAIR CURLER Filed Jan. 28, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 10, 19 41 UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR CUBLER Heliodoro Rubira, Jersey City, N. .1.
Application January 28, 1941, Serial No. 376,381
3 Claims. (Cl. 132-33) This invention relates to hair curlers and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will facilitate the winding of the hair into small ringlets so that a tight ringlet type of curl may be formed in the hair.
In accordance with the present invention means is provided for first winding the tress, starting at the outer end of the tress and winding the latter inwardly toward the scalp, and subsequently compressing the curl so formed between the parts of a clip which tend to flatten the curl into a ringlet and hold it in that position and condition until the hair has dried.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a curler embodying the features of the present invention and showing the tress wound thereon and prior to the clamping of the tress between the parts of a clip forming part of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the curler.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the curler and viewing the same from the clipequipped end thereof.
Figure 4 is an elevational view showing the curled tress compressed in the clip forming part of the invention.
Figure 5 is a perspective exploded view of a clip forming part of the invention.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the curler, with certain parts shown in elevation, and the male part of the clip in retracted condition.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the barrel forming part of the curler and showing the parts of the clip engaged for compressing the curl therebebween.
Figure 8 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 7 but with the clip removed and the plunger shown in retracted position in full line and in fully projected position in broken line.
Figure 9 is a fragmentary view somewhat similar to Figure 7 but with the parts of the clip separated, and showing a slightly modified form of clip.
Figure 10 is a plan view of the second form of clip, and
Figure 11 is a perspective exploded view of the second form of clip.
Referring more in detail to the drawings it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the curler comprises a tubular barrel 5 of metal or other suitable material which is substantially closed at one end and open at a relatively opposite end.
A spring-biased clamping lever 6 is provided adjacent one end thereof with ears I through the medium of which and pins or the like 8 the lever 6 is pivoted to the barrel 5 intermediate the ends of the latter. At the ear-equipped end thereof the lever 6 has an oflset portion 9 forming a finger-piece to facilitate swinging the lever B into and out of clamping position with respect to the barrel 5.
The barrel 5 forms a core upon which the strand or tress of hair is wound, and in this connection the operation followed involves first clamping the extreme free end of the tress between the body of the barrel 5 and the clamp 6 after which the barrel 5 and clamp 6 are rotated as a unit for winding the tress III on the barrel 5 towards the scalp, and into a coil as suggested in Figure 1. V
For compressing the coil into a relatively flat ringlet, a clip is provided, and one form of clip is shown in Figure 5 and indicated generally by the reference numeral ll, while a second or alternate form of clip is shown to advantage in Figures 10 and 11 and indicated generally by the reference numeral I2.
The clip shown in Figure 5 comprises a pair of complemental members I3, l4, and each member l3, N is formed from a blank of metal, or other suitable material, cut, shaped, and dimensioned to provide a substantially circular intermediate body portion l5 and narrow elongated arms l6 projecting from diametrically opposite sides of the body l5.
At the Junctions of the arms l6 and body I5 each clip member is provided in the upper and lower edges thereof with notches I1 and 18 to complement the edges of the barrel 5 formed by a longitudinal slot I! provided in the barrel 5 at the open end thereof.
Also the clip II has the parts l5 and I 6 of the clip member l3 provided with male fastener elements 20, 2|, while corresponding parts of the clip member I are provided with complemental female fastener elements 22, 23, to complement the fastener elements 20, 2 I, and for securing the parts l3 and ll of the clip together with the coiled strand Ill compressed therebetween.
To facilitate securing the members 13 and ll of the clip together with the curl Iflcompressed therebetween, and while the clip is mounted on the barrel 5, said barrel 5 has a plunger 24 having a working fit therein and provided on one end of a rod 25 that works through an opening provided therefor in the substantially closed end of the barrel as shown.
Housed within the barrel 5 is a contractible spring 26 that is convoluted about the rod 25 and has one end thereof secured to the rod and a second end thereof anchored to the substantially closed end of the barrel 5. The normal tendency of the spring 26 is to contract and consequently yieldably retain the plunger 24 in retracted condition within the barrel 5.
In using the clip II the member M of the clip is first placed in the slotted open end of the barrel '5 and positioned at the extreme inner end of the slot l9. Next the clip member 13 is positioned in the open end of the barrel 5 and is disposed at the extremity of said end in spaced relation to the clip member H, as shown in Figure 1. The clip members thus retain this relative position during the winding of the tress on the barrel 5. After this winding has been accomplished, the operator presses down on the finger-piece 9 of the lever 6 to release the curl, and at the same time pushes inwardly on the rod 25. This causes the plunger 24 to act against the clip member ll pushing the same forwardly from the position shown in Figure 6 to the position shown in Figure 7 resulting in a compressing of the hair curl l between the arm portions Id of the clip members and the engaging of the female fastener elements 22, 23 with the complemental male fastener elements 20, H, whereby to secure the clip members together and the hair curl tightly compressed between said clip members.
As shown in Figure 7, by continued pressure on the rod 25, the clip with the parts thereof detachably connected together and the hair curl compressed therebetween is ejected bodily from the open end of the barrel thus freeing the barrel entirely of the clip and permitting the barrel to be removed while the clip remains on the compressed curl to retain it in a tight ringlet until the hair has dried.
Thus it will be seen that with a device of this character the curling of the hair into tight ringlets can be quickly and easily accomplished and can be so accomplished without requiring a great deal of skill on the part of the operator.
The form of clip. l2, shown in Figures 9 to 11,
inclusive, differs but slightly from the hereinbefore described clip II. The clip l2 has the member l3a thereof provided with male fastener elements 20a while the clip member Ila is provided with female fastener elements 22a that complement the male fastener elements 20a. The clip I2 is, however, characterized over the clip H by the absence of the complemental fastener elements 2|, 23, and instead of such elements, the clip member l3a is provided with a centering rod or pin 21 that extends from the center of the intermediate circular portion of the body of the clip member Ba and is accommodated in an aligning aperture 28 provided therefor in the intermediate circular portion of the body of the clip member Ha. This circular portion of the member a carries the spring means for gripping the pin 21.
The clip I2 is used substantially in identically the same manner as is the clip H, and therefore further detailed description of the clip I! is believed merely superfluous.
It is thought that the simplicity of the hair curler, together with its manner of use and advantages will be clear to those skilled in the art without further detailed description.
While I have herein illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that I-claim all such forms of the invention to which I am entitled in *view of the prior art and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
