dressers and more particularly to hair curlers.

Th object of our invention is to provide a hair curler, adapted to form so-called pin curls, which have, been made heretofore, by forming a curl aroundalfinger and then holding it in place With afbobbypin or the like until the curl is set.

Another object of our invention is to provide a hair. curler of the character indicated above, which is adapted to do its work faster and better than it has been done heretofore and which will eliminate; the disagreeable features inherent in theold method of making pin curls, as for instance" the discomfort to the scalp caused by the bobby pins during the period of letting the hair dry.

Other objects of our invention may appear in the following specification describing our invention with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of our invention.

It is however to be understood, that our invention is not to be limited to the exact construction and combination of parts described in the specification and shown in the drawing, but that such changes and modifications can be made, which fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

In the drawing:

Figure 1 is a vertical, diam'etrical sectional view of an assembled hair curler according to our invention.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the top plate of a hair curler according to our invention.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the bottom plate or the curler of the present invention, and

Figure 4 is an elevational side view of an assembled hair curler showing some hair being arranged in said curler to form a pin curl.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, the hair curler forming the subject matter of our invention comprises a top plate Ill shaped like a circular disk having a centrally located, downwardly extending short stem II. On the lower portion of this stem two outwardly extending annular shoulders l2 and I3 respectively are formed, each shoulder having sloping top and bottom surfaces, as clearly shown in Figure 1.

On the lower surface of the top plate a plurality of downwardly extending teeth [4 are formed and a plurality of holes I5 extend through the top plate H]. e

A bottom plate It is shaped like a circular disk, from which a sector like portion has been cut out forming an inwardly tapering slot I1. In the center of the bottom plate It a tube I8 is secured so that it extends upwardly from the bottom plate H3. The tube it is made from corrugated sheet metal sothat three outwardly bulging corrugations [9, 20 and 2| respectively extend circumferentially around the tube I8. An axially extending slot 2?. is provided in the tube [8 imparting spring action to said tube. The corrugations I9, 20 and 2H are adapted to receive and hold the sloping shoulders. i2 and i3 therein, when the top plate Hlis (placed on top of the bottom plate It and thestem III is forced downwardly into the corrugated tube l8.

A plurality of holes 23 extend through the bottom plate It.

When the curler is to be used, the lower slanting shoulder I 3 is forced into the tube l8, until the upper corrugation I9 receives and engages this shoulder. The upper and lower plates [0 and I6 respectively are connected with each other in this manner and a selected portion of hair 24 is placed in the slot l1 and is wound clockwise or counterclockwise about the tube IB. When the end of the hair is reached, the upper plate I 0 is forced toward the lower plate It, until the lower slanting shoulder is located in the corrugation 20 and the upper slanting shoulder I2 is located in the corrugation i 9.

There will be some hair left outside of the curler, because it is impossible to put it in place with the fingers. By rotating the upper plate ID the teeth It will engage this hair and will comb the hair so that it is arranged neatly around the tube [8 inside the curler.

The upper plate I0 is then forced toward the lower plate 56 until the lower shoulder I3 is located in the lowest corrugation 2| and the upper shoulder I2 in the central corrugation 20. In this position the two plates exert a tight pressure on the hair arranged between them holding it securely in position curled around the tube 18.

The lower plate it is preferably made from rubher or from any suitable rubber backed material, preventing disagreeable pressure against th scalp.

After the hair 24 in the curler has been dried, with the help of the holes l5 and 23, the top plate I0 is removed fromthe lower plate I6, and the latter is turned about its axis, permitting the hair to slide from the tube 1 i3 and through the slot H in the form of a perfect pin curl.

Having described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A hair curler including a circular disklike bottom plate and a disklike top plate removably and rotatably mounted on the bottom plate, a resilient tube centrally secured to and extending upwardly from the bottom plate and a stem centrally formed on and extending downwardly from the upper plate, said stem being adapted to enter the tube to divers selective depths, the stem being equipped at its lower end with two annular sloping shoulders and the tube being provided with.

three outwardly protruding annular corrugations adapted to receive said shoulders.

2. A curler, comprising a pair of discs, one of. said discs being formed with an axially disposed stud, said stud being formed with at least one annular rib, the other disc being. formed. with an axially disposed sleeve adapted to telescopically receive said stud therein, said sleeve including an inner surface formed with a plurality of axially spaced annular grooves, said grooves being. complementary to said rib, and said rib and grooves comprising means for connecting said stud and sleeve together with said discs in a plurality of axially spaced positions, said discs being adapted to lee-relatively rotated in one position to wind a lock of hair onto said sleeve and form a curl, andsaid discs in a second position being adapted to clamp said curl therebetween.

A curler comprising, a pair of discs arranged in spaced facing relation with respect to each other and mounted for movement toward and awayf'rom each other, one of the confronting faces of said pair of discs having at least one radially extending row of teeth dependingly supported therefrom, the other of said confronting faces being provided with at least one radially extending row of apertures therethrough, and means carried by one of said pair of discs and operatively engaging means carried by the other of said pair of discs for rotatably supporting said pair of discs in a desired position of their movement toward each other, said first named means comprising a stem dependingly supported from the confronting face of said. one of said pair of discs, said stem being provided with an annular flange, and said last named means comprising a sleeve extending from the confronting face of the other of said pair of discs, said sleeve being provided with a plurality of spaced annular corrugations for embracingly receiving said annular shoulder.
