Description

April 4, 1939. Av cuOMO DEVICE FOR GURLING AND LOCKING HAIR Filed Aug. 23, 1957 INVENTOR. BY Jngeb 62101720 ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 4,. 1939 DEVICE FOR CURLING AND LOCKING HAIR:
Angelo Cuomo, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application August 23,
10 Claims.
My invention relates to a device for curlin and locking hair.
, to an improved hair curling and hair look holding device for curling locks of hair and then clamping the looks into fixed position.
In the hair treating art various types of 'curlers are used for turning locks of hair and then clamping them. Insome cases, a hair curler is provided which has an extended wire portion turnable over the hair curl thereby clamping the same. In such cases the curler is too bulky and many are required for the hair thereby imparting an unpleasant appearance to the wearer. In order to offset this disadvantage, hair curlers are provided by which hair pins of ripple longitudinal shape commonly known as bobble pins are used on the heads of the wearer. Such bobbie pins, however, are diiiicult to spread and hold the hair looks.
With the above and other disadvantages in view, it is an object of my invention to provide an easily operable device for curling and clamping locks of hair, which can be easily removed after the curling operation without disarranging the tufts of the hair looks.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel easily constructed device adapted to carry a hair pin and curl locks of hair and then shoot the pin thru the 'curl preparatory to clamping the same.
One other object of the present invention is to provide a novel hair curling device adapted to cooperate with a novel springy hair pin for easily clamping locks of hair.
Another object of my invention is, to provide a novel hair pin which can be easily projected thrua hair look and be closed to clamp the hair lock.
The above and other objects of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of preferred embodiments thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal, partly sectional view of a preferred embodiment, loaded with a curlholding pin which also forms a part of the invention.
Figure 2 is a partly sectional plan view of Figure 1, showing a hair lock curled and the position of the hair pin ready to be locked and clamp the hair curl.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a hair curl clamped with one of my new hair pins.
Figure 4 is an end view of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a slightly enlarged elevation of a More particularly, it relates a 1937, SerlalNo. 160,376
novel hair pin forming part of my invention, in which the straight end is rotated clockwise to close the pin. a
Figure 6 is an elevation of a modiflcation of the pin in Figure 5, in which the straight end 5 portion is rotated counterclockwise to close the pin.
Figure 7 is a partly sectional plan view of a modification of the embodiment shown in Figure 1; and Figure 8 is a section taken Figure 2.
In the drawing, like numbers refer to like parts thruout.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, a hollow tube or cylindrical member In is provided witha pair of opposed parallel longitudinal slots l l and I2 respectively, and is adapted to accommodate a wire compression spring I3, and a concentric tubular carriage l4 slidable in tube ill by means of the spring when under compression.
Tube Ill adjacent one of its ends is provided with a detent l5 pivoted thereto by means of a cross pin l6. Said pin extends thru the tube above the center of its cross section thereby forming a segment of the tube.. Furthermore, the pin extends thru the lower portion ll of the detent to permit proper leverage action of the handle l8 when moved in a downward arcuate position, as indicated by the arrow in Fig- ,ures1and2.
Said tube In is also provided with an opening IS in alignment with the detent to accommodate the engaging end 2|] of detent l5. Said end 20 forms a lock with recess 2!! of the carriage when the latter is pushed into operative position as shown in Figure 1.
Spring i3 is fixed at one end 22 to detent l5 at a point below its pivotal portion and at the other end 23 to the carriage l4. Said carriage is provided with a cross member 24 having its ends projecting outwardly of slots It and I2 respectively, to permit easy sliding of the car- 10 on line 8-8 of riage M; toward the detent thereby compressin spring 13. It is to be riotedthat when spring I3 is being compressed it automatically actuates detent l5 on its pivot to form an automatic looking engagement with the carriage, as shown in Figure l of the drawing. Also, when the detent is actuated, spring l3 normally extends longitudinally in member Ill.
Integral with said carriage M is an extended inner'tube 25 of relatively smaller diameter than tube ll). Said tube 25 is preferably disposed eccentrically with respect to tube l0 and is provided with a longitudinal opening 26 coincidental with a longitudinal opening 21 in tube II) for carrying a hair pin 28 which will be further described. The plane of said latter longitudinal opening is preferably at right angles to the plane of slots H and I2.
Tube I0 is further provided intermediate its ends and in alignment with detent IS with a pair'of spaced parallel ears 29 onto which is pivoted a tapering tubular member 30 for fastening hair strands against the adjacent or abutting portion of tube Ill. Said fastening member 30 is of reduced curvate cross section and ispivoted to ears 29 by means of a cross pin 3| intermediate the ends of said members. There is also provided a finger rest portion 32 while the major length portion 33 of the member is used for retaining hair against tube In. In order to keep portion 33 of member 3|] against tube ,IO, there is provided a spring plate 34 curled around cross pin 3| and between ears 29, one end of .said plate abutting tube [0, while the other end abuts the underside of hand rest 32 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing.
Hair pin 28, as shown in the accompanying drawing, is of novel construction in that it is easy to use for clamping hair and can be easily applied in contrast with the rippled and other types of bobbie pins now in use. The novel hair pin I have shown is preferably made of spring wire of any desirable length which is then bent in two forming a loop 34' and a straight end 35. The other end 36 of thepin is provided with a curl or twist 31 adapted to accommodate the straight end of the pin as shown in Figures 3 and 4 thereby clamping a curl of hair lock in fixed position after the curling operation.
Said pins are made, wherein the straight end is twisted around the loop 34 as a center, in a clockwise direction forming engagment with twist 3i. Such a pin 38 is shown in Figure 5, while in Figure 6, I show a pin 39 in which straight end 4|] is turned in a counter clockwise direction to engage twist 4|. While I have shown preferred novel forms of pins used in my invention, I have found that pins in which each free end is provided with a twist can also be effectively used.
In Figure 7, there is shown a modification of Figures 1 and 2. In said modification, tube 42 is provided with a pair of parallel slots 43 open at one end of the tube for taking up a lock of hair and permit the curling of saidlock. A slidable carriage and pin holder 44,111 the tube is provided which can be slid thru the tube in by means of members 45 and 45 extending outwardly therefrom and from a pair of opposed parallel slots 41 and 48 respectively. It is to be noted that the carriage is actuated byhand in the curl binding operation.
In the hair curling operation according to my invention, a pin 28 is set with the looped portion into carriage tube 25 against one end of the carriage Id therebyv leaving the-twisted or curled end of the pin exposed from longitudinal opening 21.
Carriage i4 is then pushed by means of cross member 24 against the action of spring l3 toward the detent end of the tube until it isin engage ment with detent hook 20. The curler having been thus loaded, the end of a lock of hair 49 is then held between fastener 33 and the adjacent end of tube Ill, and curled until a curl of sufficient size is obtained. The operator then releases carriage l4 by pressing detent handle l8 downward in the direction of the arrow shown in Figures 1 and 2, whereupon the carriage is sprung back to its normal position by means of compression spring [3. The pin 28 is also carried with the twisted end 36 outside the curl, while the straight end 35 is still in tube ID. The operator then locks the pin as shown in Figures 3 and 4 and then withdraws the device from the locked curl.-
-It is to be noted that by my inventiomas described in connection with the accompanying drawing, no hair pulling or hurting of fingers because of bobbie pins is present. There is an easy insertion of the hair pin thru the curled hair look and clamping of the same with a minimum expenditure of time. Furthermore, the parts embodying my invention may be made of any suitable metal such as iron, brass or aluminum.
My invention is very useful not only for women at home who fix up their own hair, but also for beauty parlor operators where time is importan in serving many people. 1
