HAIR CURLER Filed Aug. 20, 1945 IN V EN TOR.
Patented Dec. 27, 1949 UNITED ISTATE s PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates ful improvements in hair curlers and an object of the invention is to provide a hair curler which will be highly eflicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of the invention is to provide a hair curler having a core formed of such material, and in such a way as will be relatively light, thereby affording the maximum comfort to the user while wearing the core with the hair wound thereon.
A still further and equally important object of the invention is the provision of a hair curler which will afford re'adiy mounting in curling dragging the strands of hair during the removal of the clamp. r 4
Another object of the invention is the provision of a curler which comprises the minimum number of parts and has the minimum of weight and one which can be manufactured in any size and finished to match the tint or color of the hair.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the hair curler embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same showing the first application of a bunch of hair upon the curl core;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the curler embodying the invention, showing the curl completed;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 4, showing the combined clamp and roller partially removed;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the hair curler to certain new and useshowing the same in a position reversed from that shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. '7 is a cross sectional detail view to slightly enlarged scale taken substantially on line 1-1 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the curl core.
In these drawings, my improved curler is indidicated generally at It. It comprises a curl core H. This core II is preferably formed tubular in cross section and of a foraminated material which will assure the maximum degree of lightness. This material may be of finely woven wire mesh or it may be what is known as plastic screen. The principal advantages resulting from the use of this material are the maximum of comfort, lightness, and quick drying of the hair. In addition, by making the core of foraminated material, when applied within the hair it will not be readily detected and therefore by reason thereof will be substantially concealed from View. This is an important factor of my invention, when it is considered that it is nothing unusual for the user of hair curlers to go about with the head uncovered during the curling process. The shade or color of the core may be such as will match the hair of the user, thereby increasing the concealment of the core when applied to the hair.
To complete the curler, there is provided what I term a combined clamp and roller, indicated generally at l2. This combined clamp and roller includes an elongated outer jaw l3 and an elongated inner jaw [4, the other jaw l3 having an elongated slot l5 formed therein through which 4 an end portion 16 of the inner jaw I4 projects.
Corresponding end portions of these jaws l3 and M are reversely bowed as at I! to provide finger gripping portions, and these finger gripping portions are hinged together as at I8. The jaws are biased into clamping engagement with respect to each other by means of aleaf spring 19, in the manner shown in Fig. 3.
To complete the invention, the inner jaw M has a right-angularly extending finger 20 which engages the adjacent end portion 2| of the jaw I3 to slightly space the jaws l3 and M from each other to reduce to a minimum pressure applied to the end 22 of a bunch of hair 23 disposed between the outer jaw l3 and the core 23.
Fig. 3 illustrates the first step in applying a bunch of hair 23 to the curler. In this view, it will be seen that the jaws l3 and I4 have been pivoted to open position, this being accomplished by holding the bowed portion l1 between the thumb and the index finger and applying pressure thereto, with the result that the jaws I3 and I4 are pivoted to the position shown in Fig. 3, to receive between the core II and the jaw I3 the end portion 22 of a bunch of hair 23, whereupon, after receipt of this bunch of hair, the jaws I3 and I4 are permitted to be biased by the spring I9 to the position shown in Fig. 4, in which position of the jaws the end portion 22 of the hair is lightly held, the finger 20 preventing undue pressure being transmitted to the hair between the core II and the jaw I3. After this has been accomplished, the core II is rotated by rotation of the combined roller and clamp, and the bunch of hair 23 is wound upon the roller and the jaw I3 as shown in Fig. 5.
At this stage of the operation, ahairupin or hobby pin 24 of any approved. construction is inserted upon the core I I','with the outer limb portion 25 thereof disposed on the outer roll of the bunch of hair 23 and the inner limb 26 within-the cere l I-...;-}I?his hair pinor bobby :pin 24,
as before stated, may be;.of ar1 y approved construction. flowever fqg bes t results it is desirable that the -limb- 25*may be undulated a portion of its length so that the pin willbe held more securelyin, place,- ifhe limb 26 maybe a trifle shorter thanthe limb: 25, 4 this to facilitate insertion of the hair pin or bobby pinin the manner hereinbefore stated;;--It is, however, to be understood'that any-type offhairpinpr bobby pin :-'may be used; as-I d9; notwish-to-limit my- -in- .ventionto any particular form .pf construction of To remove the combinedrollerand clamp, the operator exerts the greater pressure on the bowed portion I1 -of the jaw I4, ;This is done to pivot the jaw I4 relative to; the jaw I3'and to retain as stationary as'pos siblethe jaw [31; This operation will preventthe jaw I'3 from pulling the bunch of hair 23 as rolled thereonand on the core II, away from the core I I and; wil1 dispose the jaws I3 anc l l 4 in a; position relative 'to each r' ebnbr a y s id sth aw e tive .to the ,core -I I,- the roller may be'removed bf a ness- A a f9 'e fi te rtaa qte U- may e formed of any approved material, and if it is madefrom a sheet of foram-inated material such as Wire mesh .6 RTth Q u secured ,together in an suitable manner, as by a connecting strip II, as shown in Fig. 81' j When the-hair curler is held in the position .shownin Fig. fi-the-finger 20 serves the function from the core'wi thqut distprbmglthe rolledbunch y in g ends thereof maybe 4 of preventing the core II from sliding off the jaw I4.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is manifest that I have provided a hair curler relatively simple in construction, expeditious in operation and application to the hair, and one which can be manufactured economically. The hair curler as described assures maximum comfort to the wearer, theparts thereof being relatively light in weight.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the .spiritr-of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish ,to belimitedto the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such .variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
