Patented Nov. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES HAIR WAVING APPLIANCE Carl Ronzi, Zurich, Switzerland Application August 12, 1933, Serial No. 684,875 In Switzerland August 20, 1932 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to hair waving appliances of the kind wherein a tress of hair wound upon a curler or mandrel is enclosed during the heating operation in a wrapper comprising a device for gripping the tress of hair near the roots consisting of two pivotally connected gripping limbs which are held by suitable holding means in the gripping position.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved wrapper. An important feature of the invention in this connection is the fact that one of the gripping limbs of the gripping device carries a flexible wrapper member or strip, the outer free longitudinal edge of which is thickened, means being provided for fixing said thickened edge portion either to the thickened edge portion of an identical flexible wrapper member or strip carried by the other gripping limb, or directly to the other gripping limb.
The accompanying drawing shows constructional examples of the invention:
Fig. 1 shows a first construction in plan of a wrapper in its open position.
Fig. 2 shows the same wrapper in its closed condition.
Fig. 3 illustrates a clip for holding together the two parts of the illustrated wrapper in their operative position.
Fig. 4 shows in plan a second construction of the wrapper in its open position, and I Fig. 5 is an end view of the second construction of the wrapper in its closed condition.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 1 and 2 indicate flexible wrapper members or strips which are made of heat resisting rubber and are pivoted to each other by means of metal gripping limbs 3 and 4, embedded in thickened bead-shaped longitudinal edges of the wrapper members. In the closed position of the wrapper the two wrapper members 1 and 2 contact with each other along their longitudinal edges, as shown in Fig. 2. The gripping limbs 3 and 4 are detachably held in their closed position by means of a hinged clip 5 or any other suitable means. It is understood that in the closed position, the longitudinal edge portions of the members 1 and 2 are firmly pressed against each other. According to the invention the two outer free longitudinal edges of the wrapper strips 1 and 2 are thickened and preferably provided with metallic inserts 6 and 7, and they are secured together by clips 8 inserted from either end. Another alternative construction of the securing clips 9 is shown in Fig. 3.
In the constructional example according to Figs. 4 and 5 only one flexible wrapping member or strip 10 is used. The two longitudinal edges of this wrapping member are again thickened so as to. form beads and are provided with wire or band-shaped metallic insertions 11 and 15 respectively. The inserted member 11 which constitutes one of the gripping limbs carries upon its ends projecting from the member 10, plate 12. One of these plates serves as a fixed support for the second gripping limb 13 which is entirely covered with rubber. The other plate 12 serves for holding the two gripping limbs 11 and 13 in the closed position and has for this purpose a hole into which the end of the limb 13 springs in the closed position of the gripping device. The pressing, holding and wrapping of the hair coil is in this construction effected by folding the flexible member 10 into the position shown in Fig. 5, and securing its free longitudinal edge portion. For this purpose recesses 14 are provided in the plates 12 into which the projecting portions of the metal insertions 15 are inserted. The rod 15 is provided at both ends with heads or stops 15 to hold same longitudinally in position relatively to the plates 12.
The operation is as follows:
A tress of hair which may have approximately the same width as the wrapper, after having been suitably divided from the hair, is first gripped by the gripping limbs of the wrapper. This gripping of the tress very close to the'scalp has the great advantage that it facilitates proper coiling of the tress. The coiling of the tress may now be effected according to the known flat coiling method, according to which the tress is coiled with its whole width flat upon the curler. After the tress has been coiled the curler together with the hair coil lie close to the gripping device and the wrapper is now closed so as to firmly press and hold the coil of hair. The closing of the wrapper is eifected in the first construction by turning up the two wrapper members 1 and 2 into the closing position and inserting the clips 8 or 9 and in the construction according to Figs. 4 and 5 by folding the member 10 over the coil and securing same.
I claim:
1. A wrapper for holding a coiled tress of hair during the permanent waving operation comprising in combination: a device for gripping the tress of hair near the root consisting of two pivotally connected gripping limbs, means for holding said gripping limbs in the gripping position; at least one of the gripping limbs of the gripping device being provided with a flexible wrapper member the outer free longitudinal edge of which tion; each of the two gripping limbs of the gripping device being provided with a flexible wrapper member the outer free longitudinal edge of which is thickened; and means for holding together the thickened edge portions of said flexible wrapper members; substantially as described.
