-Be it known that -I` HENRY S. BREWING- 'roN-, a citizen of the Jnited States`, residing at Baltimore city, State of. Maryland, .have invented certain new i"and usefullmprovements in Hair-Crimpers,of lwhich the following is a specification.

My invention relates to wavers and the like, and has for its object to provide a device of this character-for the purpose of crimpin or waving the hair without the a plieation of heat and without injury to the iair.

With the foregoing objects in View, my

invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter4 described and pointed out in the claim.

hair crimpers or for holding or tying the lock of hair indicated 10, the hair being usually thicker at the point nearest the head of a person than at its ends, preceding the operation of wrapping the hair about the crimping arms, as will be hereinafter described. Provided on the sides of the opposite end portion of the retaining member are wings or extensions which are rolled inwardly and downwardly above the body' part of the member to form partially open cylinders 11-11, forming catches for engaging with the free ends 9 9 of the crimping member 5 and housing them therein. The retaining member is made from flexible material so that when a lock of hair is secured therein, the body part of the member will conform to the lock of hair and the pressure on the hair will be equalized throughout the ent-ire length of the crimper. Said retaininU member throughout its length, is of a Width to underlie the arms 6 6 when in a closed position, and is also widened at the end adjacent the loops 7--7 to underlie them. Thus when the hair is wrapped upon the pin including one of its loops and the retaining member is locked to the pin,said retaining member compresses the hair on said loop and arms.

My invention is operated as follows: Assuming for the urpose of this description, that the lock of liair indicated 10, desired to be crimped or waved is worn on the head of .a person, the device is first opened as shown in Fig. 1, the lock of hair is then passed through and between the loops 7-7, thence over and under and around one of the loops as indicated at 12, forming a knot whereby the hair is held in the crimper during the plaiting or wrapping operation, which operation is as follows: The lock of hair is Cpassed from around the loop across to, un-

er and over the arm 6, thence across to, under and over the arm G, in the form ot' a figure 8, as indicated in Fig. 3, this wraping or plaiting of the hair on the two arms ino continued in the manner described until tlie entire lock of hair is secured on the arms, and the free end ot' the huir indicated 13 is secured under one of the arms by pressing the retaining member 1 against the arms and securing the free ends 9--9 within the catches 11-11 as shown in Fig. 2. It is obvious that. while the manner of securing the lock of hair in the crimper just dcscribed has beenfrestrictedto with the loop. adjacent to the arm 6,it ollows' that the same result may be obtained b beginning with the lock of hair in the oop adjoining the arm 6, the manner of securing the han' about the arms-being accomplished in the same manner as has'alreadybeen de scribed. After permitting thevlockvof hair to remain in the crimper for a requisite length of time, the arms 6 and 6 may be pressed together toward each other and the ends 9--9 released from the catches 11-11, and the arms of the crimping member be .readily withdrawn from the lock of hair, and when withdrawn the hair will have assumed the crimped or waved shape indicated li in Fig. 3.

lt will be observed that in the construction of my device there are no rough or sharp parts or edges which are exposed to the hair as likely to damage or injure the same; that the arms upon which the hair is plaited or wrapped are round and perfectly smooth and straight and offer no obstruction to the removal of the crimper from the hair.

Having fully described my invention, what -I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;

A hair crimper, comprising a crimping pin formed of a head and two arms havnig free ends extending therefrom, said head embodying a central straight section and side loops connecting said arms to said section, projecting outwardly from the base of said arms forming springs for laterally separatingsaid arms and also forming an enlarged recess between the loops to receive wrappings of hair to positively position the crimper on the hair7 and a flat retaining member having a bearing at one end in which said straight central section of the pin is pivoted, catches at its other end for the reception of the free ends ot' the pin, said retaining member being of a width f to completely underlie the loops and arms ot' said pin when in a closed position.
