SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,611, dated July 28, 1896.

Application filed March 19,1896- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNELLA SLAUGHTER GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elk Point, in the county of Union and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair- Ourlers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in hair-curlers of that class which are adapted to twist with the hair and remain attached thereto for a suitable length of time until the hair is sufficiently curled to retain its wavy or curled condition, and the object of my improvement is to provide a construction by which the hair can be more easily twisted with the curling device than with the ordinary curlers of this class.

Afurther object of the invention is to provide a curler of simple and durable construction, easy of manipulation, and cheap of manufacture.

With these ends in View my improved haircurler consists of two rolls connected or joined by an intermediate web upon which the hair can be laid to permit one roll to be twisted with the hair over the web which rolls up with the first roll until the second roll is reached in the process of twisting the hair and curler together, after which the ends of the curler may be bent up to hold the curler and the confined hair in place.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention I construct the curler of a piece of fabric, or other suitable material, the side edges of which are folded back upon the fabric and stitched thereto, forming two pockets. In each of the pockets is placed a roll or mass of cotton, hair, or other suitable soft material, and a pliable wire which is embedded in the mass of cotton or hair. The two rolls are thus provided at the side edges of the web which serves to unite the rolls together.

To enable others to understand my invention, I have illustrated the preferred embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved hair-curler. Fig. 2 is atransverse sec Serial No. 584,000. (No model.)

consists of the two rolls B O and the web D, connecting the two rolls. In the manufacture of my improved curler I take a piece of suitable material, as fabric, for example,

which is of suitable length and width, and lap or fold the edges of the material upon itself, after which the folded edges are stitched to the fabric, thus providing longitudinal pockets e e at the side edges of the fabric. The rolls B O consist of a filler or roll of cotton, hair, or other fibrous material f and a pliable wire-g, preferably of copper, although other suitable materials may be used. The pliable wire g for each roll is embedded or inolosed within the fibrous filler or roll f, and the entire body is inserted in one of the longitudinal pockets 6 of the improved curler.

It will be understood that a filler of fibrous material and pliable wire is inserted in each of the pockets 6 in the fabric, and that the two rolls B O are thus constructed in a simple and cheap manner. If desired, the ends of the pockets 6 6 may be closed by sewing together the edges of the fabric at the ends of the pockets, thus preventing the fibrous roll from escaping.

The mode of using my hair-curler is as follows: The curler is straightened out and the ends of the hair are laid or arranged upon the implement across one of the rolls 0 and the web D. The implement is now rolled upon itself and with the hair, beginning with the side having the rollB. The operation of rolling the hair and roll B within the web D is continued until the rolls B 0 come together, and, if desired, the hair may be wound or coiled upon the rolled-up curler until the curler is close to the head, after which the ends of the curler are bent up or folded over upon the implement and the hair, as shown by Fig. 4. The pliable wires g within the rolls or cores of fibrous material serve to hold the curler in its bent, attached position, and the curler can thus remain attached to the hair for a length of time suflicient to insure proper curling of the hair.

My construction is an improvement upon ordinary hair-curlers in that the implement rolls or folds with the hair under treatment and thus confines or holds the hair to better advantage than when the hair is simply twisted around the curler.

'My construction can be manufactured as cheaply as the ordinary curlers, and it is simple and durable, as well as cheap of manufacture.

I am aware that slight changes can be made in the form and proportion of parts or details of construction Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of my invention. 7

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by- Letters Patent, is-

2. As a new article of manufacture, a haircurler consisting of a pliable web, provided at its sides with longitudinal pockets, and rolls inclosed in the pockets, at the sides of the web,

and each roll provided with a pliable wire and a filler of fibrous material, as and for the purposes described. I p
