CAMILLA JULIER, OF GREENFIELD, INDIANA.
HAIR CURLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,593, dated June 15, 1897.
Application filed January 20, 1397. Serial No. 619,842. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAMILLA J U LIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Hancock and State of Indianznhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Curling Hair, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for curling hair; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a sectional plan or side View of my improved hair-curler.
In the drawing forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of reference, and in the practice of my invention I provide two flexible wires or rods 5, each of which is provided at one end with a loop 6, and said wires or rods are connected at the opposite ends, as shown at 7, this connection being a pivoted or hinged connection, said wires or rods being each provided with an eye or ring, one of which is passed through the other, as will be readily understood and as is shown in the drawing. These wires or rods 5 are covered by a flexible covering 8, of soft leather, and this covering extends from one end to the other of the device and incloses the pivotal or hinged connection at 7, and the said covering is packed, as shown at 9, with cotton, wool, or any soft flexible material, and the covering 8 is also larger at one end of the device than at the other, the packing being correspondingly thicker.
In practice this device is used in a manner similar to that of other hair-curlers of this class, the hair being wound thereon and the curler being twisted around the hair, so as to hold it in place; and by covering the hinged connections of the wires or rods 5 or extending the covering 8 and the packing 9 thereover I prevent the hair from becoming entangled with said wires or rods at the point where the separate ends thereof are connected.
The hair is preferably in the operation of the device wrapped around the larger end of the device and the smaller end thereof is brought over and locked in the end loop of the larger end, and this holds the separate ends thereof together, and the loop 6 on the smaller end of the device is preferably so formed as to be inserted through the loop 6 on the larger end, and by means of this arrangement the separate ends of the curler will be securely held together.
This device is light and durable, and by 0011- necting the separate wires or rods, as shown at 7, I provide means for preventing the breaking of the device, which frequently occurs when a continuous wire or rod is employed.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article 0f manufacture, a hair-curler, the same comprising two separate wires which are hinged together by eyes or rings, and which are each provided with a loop at the free end thereof; a leather covering which incloses the said hinged connections and extends to the said end loops; a fibrous packing inserted between the said wires and cover, the packing on one of said wires being thicker than on the other, and the leather covering being correspondingly enlarged, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of January, 1897.
OAMILLA JULIER.
