TIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1916.
Applicationfilerl February 26, 1915. Serial No. 10,751.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pemberton, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tiers, of which the following is a. specification. This invention is an improved tier for use in tying bags, bundles, parcels and the like and also adapted for use in tying bundles of corn fodder and other feed. The object of my invention is to provide an improved tier of this class by means of which a bag, bundle, parcel or the like may be quickly tied and untied and without the necessity of tying or loosening a knot, an other object being to provide an improved device of this character which when not in use may be laid away for future service.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of de vices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tier constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectional view of the same Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring particularly to the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 a base plate 1 is provided which is here shown as longitudinally curved and adapted to bear on one side of a bundle which presents a curved surface. The plate may be otherwise constructed within the spirit of my invention. ()n the other side of the plate is a double hook 2 which is made from a single piece of wire doubled in the center, formed with an eye 3, a twisted shank 4t and a pair of hook arms 5, 6 which are arranged at a slight angle with reference'to each other, the arm 6 being slightly closer to the base plate than the hook arm 5. The double hook is secured on the base plate by a clip 7 which is substantially U-shaped and has its central portion arranged on the outer side of and parallel with the twisted shank t. One arm 8 of said clip passes through the eye 3 of the double hook shank V' and also through an opening in the base plate and 1s clenched on the inner side of the base plate as at 9. The other arm 10 of the clip passes between the hook arms at the point where they diverge from the twisted shank, and also passes through an opening in the base plate and has its end clenched on the inner side of the said base plate as at 11. A cord 12, to be passed around the bag, bundle, or parcel, has one end attached to the device, preferably at the clenched portion of the clip arm 8.
To tie a bag, parcel or bundle, the base I plate is placed on one side thereof and the cord passed around said bag, bundle or parcel and drawn as tightly as required and then brought along the right hand side of the tier and then turned to the left and passed through both hooks, and when drawn tightly is then Wrapped on the left hook 6 and passed up between the hooks, turned to the left around the left hook, thence up between the hooks and turned to the right over the right hook 5, care being exercised to draw the cord well into the bottom of the right hook 6, the tie being thus completed. To untie, the cord is reversely manipulated to disengage it from the hooks.
Having thus described my invention I claim 7' 4 The herein described tier comprising a de vice having a pair of hooks at one end extending in opposite directions and an eye at the opposite end, a plate on which the double hook device is mounted, and a clip having an arm passing through said eye and an opening in the plate, and also having an arm passing between the hooks and through another opening in the plate, said clip connecting the double hook device to the plate and preventing said hook device from turning pivotally.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. HAHN.
Witnesses G. K. MONROE, FRED CoUN'rs.
