OF W'AYLAND, MISSOURI.
PAC KAG E-TI E FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 736,499, dated August 18, 1903.
Application filed December 5, 1902. Serial No. 134.043. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known th at I, FRANCIS M. CRAWFORD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Wayland, in the county of Clark and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Package-Tie Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in package-tie fasteners for mail-matter or other 1o packages, and has for its object to furnish a cheap reliable means of fastening the ends of a piece of twine or cord Without tying a knot and which may be quickly unfastened without cutting the cord or twine, and thereby enable the cord or fastening, or both, to be used over and over again and in this-way effect a great saving of material which might otherwise be wasted.
A further object of the invention is to prozo vide a securing device provided with a cordattaching means at points intermediate of its ends, so that the ends may be left free for the winding or coiling of the free end of the cord in the form of a ligure-8 bight or German loop.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing how the tie is applied to the package. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the completed tie. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line i 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings, 1 designates a package, and 2 the fastener,
4o which consists of a body portion 3, having a flattened base 4, straight parallel sides 5, and
a rounded or oval upper surface 6, provided with a transversely-disposed clam ping-groove or kerf 7. The clampinggroove 7 1s provided with an inclined tapering throat 8, the Width of which is somewhat less than the diameter of the cord to be clamped and has an enlarged mouth 9 to facilitate the easy introduction of said cord. The fastener is provided with upwardly and outwardly inclined or beveled end portions 10, that admit of said body being tilted when the cord is being passed under it preparatory to forming the tie and also serve as a means for winding any surplus cord after the tie is completed, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Ata point intermediate of the ends of the fastener I provide a transversely-disposed aperture 11, adapted to receive a cord 12, which may be fastened therein by any suitable means, the cord being attached at a suitable distance from the end of the fastener to permit the winding or ceiling of the surplus cord. In this instance I have shown the cord 12 passing loosely through the aperture 1l and having a knot 13 formed in its end, which bears against the flat side 5 of the body portion and prevents the dislodgment of said cord when the device is in use.
l In applying the device the fastener is placed on the package with one end slightly elevated, as clearly shownin Fig. 1 of the drawings. The cord is then passedtransversely around. the package and under said fastener, crossing the first wrap, and passed longitudinallyaround thepackage. Thecord is then clamped in the groove 8 and thence turned around the body of the fastener to form a half-hitch and any surplus cord wound around the fastener in the form of a figure- 8 bight or German loop, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages'ofthe invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A package-fastener comprising a bodypiece having a flattened base and a rounded upper surface and provided witha clampinggroove.
2. A package-fastener comprising a bodypiece having a liattened base, inclined or beveled end portions and a rounded upper surface and provided with a clamping-groove.
3. A package-fastener comprising a bodypiece havingaoord afxed thereto, said bodyprovided at an intermediate point With a piece having a flattened base and rounded u pper surface and provided with a transverselydisposed clamping-groove.
, 4. A package-fastener comprising a bodypiece having inclined or beveled end portions and a oord affixed to one of said end portions, said body-piece having a flattened base and a rounded upper surface and provided with a Io transversely-disposed clamping-groove.
5. A package-fastener comprising a bodypiece having a cord secured near one end and oord-engaging groove, the opposite ends of the body-piece being inclined or beveled upwardly from the base thereof to permit the Winding of the surplus cord.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
FRANCIS M. CRAWFORD.
