Description

(No Model.)
J. E. PURDY. PARCEL FASTENING DEVICE.
No. 590,591. Patented Sept. 28,1891
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JAMES E. FURDY, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
PARCEL-FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,591, dated September 28, 1897.
Application filed February 9, 1897- Serial No. 622,662. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs E. PURDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofNcw York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parcel-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved parcel-fastenin g device, the object thereof being to supply an efficient means for fastening parcels without the necessity of tying bows or other knots, whereby parcels may be quickly fastened or unfastened Without the necessity of breaking the string orinj uring the fastener, which can therefore be reused until it is en.- tirely worn out.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a folding box having my improved fastener attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a frame adapted for surrounding the box for bracingor strengthening it. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box, showing the same folded. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the box fastened ready for shipment. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the fastener, illustrating the bottom surface thereof. Fig. 6 is a similar view illustrating the top sur face of the fastener. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section taken on a line as no of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a plan view of the modified form of fastener.
In the practice of myinvention the fastener comprises, primarily, a button A, having a longitudinal groove a extended across the bottom thereof, and T-shaped slots a cut therethrough, the longitudinal portions a of these said slots being located upon a line with the groove a. In conjunction with the button A a string B is used. This said string is of any suitable length, depending upon the size of the parcel to be fastened, and the short end thereof is preferably supplied with a knot 17 to prevent it from being accidentally removed from the button.
Vhen the device is used to fasten an ordinary parcel, an operator will press the knot 1) against approximately the center of the bundle and hold the same there and then wind the string around, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The free end thereof is then coiled around once or twice between the button and the package and then carried upwardly through one of the longitudinal openings a and across downwardly through the opposite opening, whereby the stringis securely fastened; and to remove the same or unfasten the bundle it is simply necessary to remove the free end of the string from the T-shaped slots and then uncoil it.
IVhen the device is used in combination with a folding box, as illustrated in the drawings, the knot b is brought into engagement with an approximately Y-shaped slot 0 of the box 0, and to strengthen and supply rigidity to this box I supply a frame O, which surrounds the same and is held thereto by means of the string when the same is coiled around the box, or the frame 0 may be fastened to the box after the string has been attached. WVhen used in this way, a screw or otherfastener will be used to prevent the frame from accidentally being displaced.
In the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 8 the button A is supplied with two oppositely-located T-shaped slots a and the longitudinal portions thereof communicate with grooves a This construction is adaptable for fastening the two free ends of a stringfor instance, a shoestring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A parcel-fastener, comprising a button having a convex and grooved under surface and T-shaped slots therein, and a string engaging with said slots, substantially as shown and described.
2. A parcel-fastener, comprising a button having a fiat upper surface anda convex lower surface, said button having a groove in its lower surface and approximately T- shaped slots extended therethrough, the longitudinal portions of the slots communicating with the groove in the lower surface of the button, substantially as shown and described.
As a parcel-fastener, the combination of a button having a convex under surface and T'shaped slots extended therethrough and grooves formed upon the under surface thereof, and a string engaging with the said slots, substantially as shown and described.
i. The combination with a-foldingbox having a Y-shaped slot in the lid thereof, of a fastener comprising a knotted string engaging with the said Y-shaped slot, and a button having T-shaped slots therethrough and a groove upon the under surface thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 7th day of February 1897.
