PAPER BAG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,483, dated July 19, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Leon PLANOHE, of the city of Salins, in the Republic of France,have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Meansof Closing Bags, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a very simple, cheap, and strong means of closing paper bags, such as are largely used for packing hardware, groceries, drugs, confectionery, and other substances.

To this end my invention consists in the combination, with a paper bag, of a strap or band of paper permanently attached thereto, and adapted to extend across the mouth thereof when closed, a paper bar secured at the ends to the bag, and under and around which the free end of the strap or band may be passed and doubled, and a second bar, under which the free end of the strap or band is passed and returned backward or upward upon itself, whereby I provide a simpleand cheap fastening which cannot get displaced, as it is permanently attached to the bag, and which, being made of paper, like the bag, does notinterfere with the folding and packing of the bags in bundles or packages.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side viewof a portion of a bag and strap and a section through afastening device embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a face view of said bag and fastening. Fig. 3 represents a face view ofa portion of a bag and a fastening, of slightly-modified form, also embodyin g my invention. Fig. arepresents a side view of the bag and a section of the fastening device; and Fig.5 represents a face view of a portion of a bag and a fastening of slightlymodified form.

Similar letters of reference design ate corresponding parts in all the figures.

aper; and A designates a strap or band, of

paper, secured at a tothe bag upon one side,- and carried up over the closed mouth of the bag and down upon the'front thereof.

Referring first to Figs. land 2, B designates end I) to the bag, and slotted to form a cross piece or bar, b and a second cross piece or bar, b above the former.

In order to fasten the bag, the free end a of the strap or band A is passed under the piece B and folded or doubled around the cross piece or bar 12 after whiclfthe end is inserted under the bar 71 and returned backward and upward upon itself.

The piece B (shown in Figs. 3 and 4) comprises a lower bar, 12 and two upper bars, 11 b When this is used the free end a of the strap or band A is passed under the bar I), over the bar 6 and under the bar b and doubled round the latter, after which it is inserted under the bar I) and returned backward and upward upon itself.

In Fig. 5 I have represented a single bar, 0 as secured to the bag at each end, and around which the free end a of the strap or band A is doubled. In this instance the bar under which the free end of the strap is inserted is formed by a loop, 0.

In all the figures it will be observed that the ends of the lower cross piece or bar, b are secured to the bag, and hence the strap is griped between said piece or bar and the bag.

By my invention I provide a very simple and cheap and at the same time a secure fastening for bags. V

The object of my invention is not to make afastening that may be used many times, but a very cheap fastening that may be applied to small paper bags at a very small cost, and is used with the bag and thrown away when the bag is thrown away. Inasmuch as my strap or band is permanently attached to the bag, it cannot get displaced, and is always ready for use; and as it, like the bag, is made of paper, it may be folded with the bag, and will not interfere with the packingof the bagsin bundles or packages for sale.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a paper bag, of a strap I or band of paper permanently attached to the bag, and adapted to extend across the mouth thereof when closed, a paper bar secured at the bags in bundles or packages, substantially as herein specified.
