D.R.PORTER.
BAG TIE;
Patented Mr. 24, 1896.

ANDREW B GRAHAM FHOYU-LWHO WASNQNFYONDI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL R. PORTER, OF CHELSEA, ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT T. HAYWARD,
A OF REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BAG-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,083, dated March 24, 1896. Application filed July 1, 1895. Serial No. 554,618- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL R. PORTER, of
Chelsea, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Ties, of which the following is a specification. This invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective bag tie or fastener adapted to be readily applied to and removed from a bag; and it consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view. Fig. 2 represents a side view taken from the inner side. Fig. 3 represents an end View. Fig. 4 represents a top view. Fig. 5 represents a side view taken from the outer side.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
My improved bag-tie is composed of a single piece of wire, and comprises the pin a, which constitutes one end of the piece, the longer arm a extending substantially parallel with the pin and connected thereto by the neck or loop (6 the hook a formed on one end of the arm a by bending the wire to form the neck 2, the beak 3 and the neck 4, the shorter arm a extending from the neck 4 and separated from the longer arm of by a narrow throat 5, and the pin-point-engaging hook a formed by bending the other end of the wire into a loop. The bag-string b is tied at one end to the neck a and has a knot or protuberance b at or near its free end.
The device is attached to the bag by engaging the pin therewith in such manner as to locate the hook a between the arm a and the bag, as shown in Fig. 4. The string is then carried around the bag, and its knot or protuberance is slipped through the throat 5 and into the hook a The protuberance b is of greater diameter than the width of the space between the parts of the hook a so that it cannot slip through the hook, but is held in engagement therewith by the effort of the con tracted portion of the bag to expand.
To open the bag it is only necessary to draw the protuberance I) out of the hook a through the throat 5, using sufficient force on the string to slightly contract the portion of the bag encircled thereby.
I claim- 1. A bag-fastening device formed of a piece of wire comprising a pin, a longer arm or bar connected with the pin by a loop or neck, a cord-engaging hook formed at one end of said arm and projecting laterally therefrom, a shorter arm extending from one end of said hook and separated from the longer arm by a narrow throat which is open at one end, and
a pin-point-engaging hook or keeper formed on the end of said shorter arm.
2. A bag-fastening device formed of a piece of wire comprising a'pin, a longer arm or bar connected with the pin by a loop or neck, a cord-engaginghook formed at one end of said arm and projecting laterally therefrom, a shorter arm extending from one end of said hook and separated from the longer arm by a narrow throat which is open at one end, a pin-point-engaging hook or keeper formed on the end of said shorter arm, and a cord or string secured to said loop and having a protuberance formed to engage said hook.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of June, A. D. 1895.
DANIEL R. PORTER. Witnesses C. F. BROWN, A. T. HAYWARD.
Cqrpec tion in Letters Patent No. 557,083.
It is hereby certified that the name of the assignee in Letters Patent N 0. 557,083,
granted March 24, 1896, upon the application of Daniel R. Porter, of Chelsea, Massaehusetts, for an improyement in Bag-Ties, was erroneously written and printed Albert '1. Hayward, whereas said name sheuld have been written and printed Albert F. Hayward and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the ease in the Patent Oflice.
