Description
w. H. BROWN.
Bag Fastener.
' N02 56,894. I Patented Aug. 7, 1366.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
WILLIAMH. BROWN, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
I MPROVE MENT IN BAG-FASTENERS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,894, dated August 7, 1866; antedated August 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W[LLIAM H. BROWN, of Worcester, in the county oftWorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful device to be used instead of strings for securingthe mouths of bags or sacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view representing the device in the position in which it is used when clasped around the mouth of a bag or sack. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, showing its position atone stage of the operation in applying it.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in either figure.
This invention consists in the construction of a metallic clasp composed of the segments A, B, and G, hinged together at a and b, the lever D, hinged at e to the segment A, and the link E, inserted atfin the lever D. Hooks h h h h are formed on the outer edge of the segment 0, into which the link E is made to catch when being used. The eye H is (16? signedfor the convenience of attaching the clasp to the article on which it is to be used.
In applying the clasp the lever D is turned outward into the position shown in Fig. 2; the linkE is also thrown outward, carried around the mouth of the sack, and caught over one of the hooks h, after which the clasp is tightened by bringing the lever back into the position shown in Fig. 1. When it is in this position the strain on the link and other parts has a tendency to hold the lever in conjunction with the segment B, for in separating it therefrom the clasp must be somewhat tightened before the endfof the link can be made to pass the line drawn from its other end through the fulcrum e of the lever. The outward pressure against the link, however, will generally partially overcome this strain, so that a slight accident might release the fastening if there were no other security. I therefore form. on the end of the lever a small catch, 0, which, being pushed under and inside of the segment B, secures itfrom any probability of accidental release. A notch, a, formed in the segment, enables, the catch to be more easily inserted under the pressure against it. A single rigid segment may be used instead ofthe two jointed ones, B and C; but when the inner hooks are used thejoint b admits of the outer end of the segment G being folded down more closely to the sack.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
1.. The combination and arrangement of the segments A, B, and (J, the lever D, and link E, substantially as described.
2. The method described of securing the clasp against accidental release.
WM. H. BROWN.
