IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18,922, dated July 25, 1865.

Be it known that I, Annrson U. FLETCHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Bags, Sacks, 820.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is front view of a fastening constructed according to my idea. Fig. 2 is an edge or side view of same. Fig. 3 is a view showing one of the modes of application to the neck of a bag or sack. Fig. 4. is a similar view, showing a modification of the one represented by Fig. 3.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

The object of my invention is to produce a cheap and substantial fastening for securing the necks of bags, sacks, and articles of a similar character, to save time of tying and untying, to economize the use of the twine or string used in securing the same, and to prevent loss of string or twine when the bag or sack is opened, the string being always attached to the fastening,and the latter, when desired,being attached permanently to the neck of the bag.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and apply my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.

The fastening A is composed of a plate of metal of a form nearly resembling a parallelogram, witha projecting lug or wing, b, from one side, the inner edge of the said wing being at a suitable distance from the edgeof the main body of the plate as to allow a cord ofsufiicient thickness to pass freely between. The lower end or foot, 0, of the fastening is turned upward for a short distance, and forms a curve on its lower side for the purpose of facilitating the securing or undoing of the fastening, and to prevent it from tearing the bag when in use. There are two holes in the body of the fastening, a and e, the first of which is for the purpose of securing the fasteuin g to a bag or sack, the second for the purpose of holding the cord used in the securing of the neck of the bag. The fastening should preferably be secured to the bag either by means of sewing or riveting, the first plan being shown in Fig. 3 atf, and the second in Fig. 4 atf, although it is not absolutely necessary that it be secured to' A said cord or string is passed to the right once entirely around the neck of the bag, and brought to the wing b, when it is passed up under the back of the said wing, and drawn out through the slot formed between the wing and body of the fastening. It is then passed down until it reaches the curved foot 0, and is then slipped under and behind the said foot, as shown in Fig. 8. This completes the tying or securing of the neck of the bag, and forms a peculiar knot, so to speak, from one end of acord, which crosses itself twice at right angles, in which position a cord can hardly be pulled loose or slackened from any article when the strain is brought upon the opposite end of the cord; or, instead of fastening the neck, as last described, with winding the cord g but once around the same, it may still further be secured by winding the cord g, as shown in Fig. et, twice or more times around the neck before passing it under the wing 11 and foot 0, as before described.

The fastening may either be entirely straight on its edges from one end to the other, except where wing b commences, or cut away near the foot by a re-entrant curve, as represented in the drawings, and when the same is not secured by riveting or other means to the'bag the upper part serves the purpose of a handle for the operator when tying or securing the neck of the bag or sack. The foot 0 presses against the outer surface of the bag in proportion to the fullness of the same.

' What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The fastening for bags and sacks constructed as herein described, and operating in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
