UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CAMILLE POIRIER, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
PACK-STRAP.
hSPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,932, dated December 12, 1882.
.Application filed October 11, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CAMILLE POIRIER, of Duluth, in the county ot' St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Pack-Strap, of which the followingis a full, clear, and eXact description.
The object ot' my invention is to provide a new and improved pack-strap for holding and packing articles of clothing, provisions, and other articles which are to be carried in apachage on the back.
`The invention consists in a bag formed with a tiap and provided with shoulder-straps and a head-strap for supporting and carrying the bag on the back. Sliding pads are provided on the shoulder-straps, which are united by a transverse strap.
The invention also consists in a strap on the sack orbag'for the purpose ot holding an umbrella or sunshadc over the head of the person carrying the sack.
` Reference is to be had to the accompan yin g drawings, forming part ot' this specication, in which similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved pack-strap, showing the side that is to rest against the back. Fig.2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the outer side; Fig. 3 shows the manner of using the pack-strap.
A sack or bag, A, which is made of canvas, leather, or any other suitable material, is open at its topand is provided with a wing or ap, B, which rests on the cuter surface of the bag and is providedwith a series of straps, C, by means ot' which and buckles D on the sack or bag A the tlap can be held to the bag, andthe opening ot' the bag will be closed. A broad head-strap, E, is secured to the bag at the top and on that side which is to rest against the back. rIhe head-strap can be adjusted in length as may be desired, as its ends are secured to buckles secured to the bag or-sack A. Two shoulder-straps, F, have thehupper ends secured to apiece of leather, G, on the ha g A, and the lower ends ot' the said straps can be secured to the bagby means ot' buckles H, fastened to the lowercorners of the bag on the surface that is to rest against the back. Two straps, I, are provided with end loops, through which the straps F pass, so that the straps I can be adjusted higher or lower ou the straps F. The free ends of the straps I are united by a buckle, J, which permits ot'` adjusting the length ot the united straps I according to convenience. The straps F are provided with adjustable or sliding pads K,ofleather, which are wider than the straps F for thepurpose ot' distributing the pressure ofthe straps F and preventing them from paining the person that is carrying the bundle. On the outer surface of the hap B aloop-strap, M, is secured, which is to be used to hold an umbrella or sun-shade over the head ofthe person carrying the bundle. Provisions, Sac., are placed in the bag A, and a blanket, L, is placed under the Hap B, under which it is held in position by means ot the straps C. The arms are passed through the loops formed bythe straps F, and by means ot' the straps l the straps F are drawn together sufficiently to prevent the bundle from slipping of the back. The head-strap E is passed over the forehead of the wearer, and is iused to assist in carrying the weight of the bundle. The provisions, Soc., need not vbe disturbed if the blanket is to be removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the bag A, ofthe shoulder-straps F and the head-strap E, suhstantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the bag A, of the straps F and the sliding pads K, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. i
3. Thecombination, with the bag A, of the straps F, the sliding pads K, the sliding straps I, and the buckle J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The bag A, provided with the ap B, the straps F, and the strap M ou the back ot the bag, substantially as hereinA shown and de scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
CAMILLE POIRIER.
