Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
F. DURAND, OF SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOULDER-BRACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 52,400, dated February 6, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, F. DURAND, of Seymour, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bodices or Shoulder-Braces;
and-I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The subject of this invention is adapted for a combined bodice and shoulder-brace, the brace' being a complete article which may be used separately or connected by a lacing-cord with a corset or bodice.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements are represented, Figure 1 being a side view of the bodice and shoulder-braces as applied to a young miss; Fig. 2, a view of the back part when similarly applied, and Fig. 3 a view of the bodice when removed from the person. t
a a in the drawings represent the bodice made in two parts, b and c, laced together by cords d d passed through the eyelet-holesff of the same. The bodice is made of the usual materials employed and of dilferent sizes, but of smaller dimensions at its lower part, g, than the upper, so as to fit more closely about the person when applied, the bodice being buttoned or looped in front in the ordinary manner.
Attached to the back of the bodice, and by means of its lacing-cords del, are the shoulder braces or straps h h, one upon each part b and c, and made of more than sufficient length to pass entirely around, over, and under the shoulders, each fastening upon bucklesl Z attached to the laced pieces m m with elastic straps n n, made of any suitable elastic fabric.
The shoulder-braces can be made of any suitable material, and are secured toits pieces laced to the bodice by means of short elastic bands or straps o o, madeef any proper elastic fabric.
p p are buttons on each side of bodice, on which the upper end of the skirt can be buttoned, if desired. v
The bodice is made of such a length as not to extend quite to the hips of the person.
The advantages of the above-described bodice and its shoulder-straps are many, and have been principally hereinbefore mentioned.
It is evident that by attaching the shoulder-braces to the bodice, as described, they can be easily detached therefrom when desired, and also it enables a great purchase to be obtained upon the shoulders.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, the shoulder-brace h l m u o, constructed as herein specified, so as to be adapted for use either separatelyvas a brace or connected by the lacing-cord to a corset or bodice.
F. DURAND.
