Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM ROSSETER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED CARTRI DGE-BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,304, dated August 8, 1865.
To all whom 'it 'may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM lossE'rEmof Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gartridge- Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The presentinven tion consists,in lieu of usin g separate straps or loops on the cartridge-box for the shoulder and belt straps to pass through, as has heretofore been the case, in the employment of a flat piece of leather of nearly the same dimensions as the box, secured at each of its corners to and upon the same by rivets, or in any other proper manner, under which the shoulder and belt straps are passed, as with ordinary cartridge-boxes, the shoulder-strap being united together at ornear its ends by means of sewing, and then fastened over and upon a fixed staple or button attached at or near the center to the lower side or edge ofthe cartridgebox.
ln the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement is illustrated, the figure representing a view of the back side of the cartridgebox, showing the shoulder and belt straps attached thereto.
a a in the drawing represent a cartridge-box, made ofthe ordinary form andl materials generally used for that purpose, to and upon the rear portion or side, b, of which is secured, by means of rivets c c, &c., or in any other proper manner, a fiat piece of leather, d, made of nearly the same dimensions as the side b, under and between which and the exterior surface of the box a the belt and shoulder straps f and g are passed, as ordinarily, the shoulder-strap g being secured together at or near its two ends by sewing, or in any other proper manner, and
then its united portion h placed over and upon the button or fixed staple l, secured in the un-` der side of the cartridge-box at or near its center, and upon which the flap-piece m of the box is ordinaril y fastened by the strap n.
By using one piece upon the back of the cartridge-box for holding both the shoulder and belt straps to and upon the same, as described, it is evident that any severe lateral strain which enlarges therivet-holes, and thereby endangers the penetration of moisture to the interior of the box, is prevented, and that also the wearing of the box is rendered much more comfortable and easy, as a smooth and even surface is thus given to the same in lieu of several projecting loops or straps at different points thereof, as heretofore; and, furthermore, it may be here remarked that by attaching the shoulder-strap together and then securing it to and upon a button of the cartridge-box, as described, that a much neater and better fastening is secured and the use of two buckles, as heretofore, wholly dispensed with.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The broad at loop d, consisting of a single piece of leather or other material, attached by its corners to the back of the cartridge-box a, and employed to confine both the belt fand shoulder-straps g g, which are passed between the said dat loop and the back of the box, all as herein specified.
The above specication of my invention signed by me.
M. M; LIVINGSTON, O. L. TOPLIFF.
