JOHN F. CLARK, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 51,146, dated November 28, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. CLARK, of the city and county ot Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, consisting1 of an appendage which is termed a guard7 or case,77 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying' draw ings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.

rIhe nature ofmy improvementin Suspenders consists in the addition, to the Suspenders now in use, of a guard or case for covering the straps or loops ot' the Suspenders liable to be soiled or disgured, as they are 'covered from view by the case. In addition to this use I also, in Some cases,1nake a pocketin the flap for holdin g a watch, thus a'ording great comfort and security in wearing that article.

To enable others to make and use my invention, which is so simplein its character as easily to be understood from an inspection ot' the drawings, of which- Figure l shows the guard, A is the body; D, a watch or money pocket; cc,button'holes. In the reverse, Fig. 2, are shown loops b b b,through which the suspemler-straps may be passed,thus

obviating the necessity of the button-holes Fig. 3 is a modiication ot' the flap or guard leaving out that portion for the pocket.

The taste ofthe workman may vary the shape, and the material may be such as fancy directs. When made of a material that will wash it will be suitable for summer.

At the upper end are small holes I'orfastening it under the suspender-buckle when one is employed; but where the Suspenders are passed through a slide the strap bat the back ot' the case Will keep it in place. In Fig. l is shown, in dotted line, thc main strap ot' the Suspenders, the buckle, and part of the front straps.

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The addition to the common Suspenders, ofa gua-rd or cover for the front straps thereof, in the manner and for the purposes Substantially as set forth.

2. Attaching a guard, having a pocket for a watch or money, substantially as set forth, to Suspenders.
