Description
N. PETERS, FHOTOLITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
J. A. ENGELHARD, OF S'I. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE HARTMAN, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVED MONEY-SAFE FOR TRAVELERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,785, dated February 24, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J A. ENGELHARD, of the city and county ofSt. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Travelers Money-Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a, full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and made to form a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a money-safe for travelers, of leather, cloth., india-rubber, or other suitable material, having formed in it a series of pockets adapted to receive specie, banknotes, or other valuable papers, in such manner that it may be worn without inconvenience upon the breast of the traveler or wearer, and serve as a protector from cold, as well as a simple, cheap, convenient, and efficient safe for money, as hereinafter set forth and represented.
In reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a frontelevation of my improved safe; Fig. 2 represents the mode of adjusting the same for use, and Figs. 3 and 4 are rear views, showing the arrangement of straps for securin g the safe upon the body ofthe wearer.
A represents the safe, which may be formed of leather, cloth, or other suitable material, with the pockets B, which are adapted to receive bank-notes or valuable papers, as shown clearly in Fig. l, and with the pockets D, which are adapted to receive specie, and also with the pockets E, which maybe used for specie, precious stones, or other valuables of small size. The said pockets are all provided with laps f, which button closely and securely upon the pockets, and thereby prevent the contents ofthe pockets from falling out, while at the same time the fastening may be readily and conveniently undone by the wearer when desired. g are straps attached to the upper part of the safe, and are intended to pars over the shoulders of the wearer, cross each other, as shown in Fig. 4, and be secured properly by means of buckles h on straps k. Another mode of suspending the safe is represented by Fig. 4, the strap m being adapted to pass around the neck and the strap 'n around the body of the wearer.
The safe being constructed and worn as represented forms a very serviceable and desirable protector for the breast of the wearer against cold at the same time it fulfills its design as a money-safe. the body, or between the under garments, where it may at all times be accessible to the hand of the wearer, and still be secure from external observation. No disarrangementor inconvenience of dress is occasioned by the use ofmy invention, whereas the money-safes 'or belts in common use are often the cause of serious annoyance to the wearer, aside from the diculty of reaching their contents.
I do not wish to confine myself to the precise number or arrangement of the pockets of the safe, as it is obvious the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention 5 but,
Having described the construction and mode of using my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The safe A, with its pockets B D E, and straps g k or m n, all being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes specified and represented, as a new article of manufacture.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
J. A. ENGELHAED. [n s] It may be Worn next
