UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. RUPPREOHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,273, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed August 20, 1891- Serial No. 03,152. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. RUPPREcH'r, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Bearers and VVaistbands for Trousers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to the construction of trousers which are provided with elastic webbing inserted in the waistband, whereby the trousers are kept in place without the use of suspenders; and the object is to so improve the construction as to distribute the strain upon the waistband over the whole extent of the elastic web, to keep the pocket in place, to improve the lit of the trousers, and to di minish the cost of manufacture. To these ends I secure the upper portion of the elastic web to a dividedinside belt, and to'the lower portion of said web and to the said belt I secure substantially triangular curtains, so that every part of the web is called into service.
by the least expansion of the abdomen, whereas heretofore that portion of the elastic web below the line of the waistband was useless. Furthermore, as the pocket is secured to and borne by the elastic web these curtains also serve to keep the pocket in place. Finally, the inside belt, the elastic web or pocket-bearer, and the curtains may all be sewed together and subsequently stitched by machine in place in the trousers.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the upper portion of a pair 'of trousers constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail view.
In carrying my invention into practice I prefer to substitute for the upper portion of the inner side of the pocket a or pocketbearer a piece of elastic fabric 1) and to sever the usual outside portion of the waistband entirely, as indicated at c. The shape which is given to the flap of the pocket is entirely immaterial; but in the construction shown the fabric of the trousers is cut away and the elastic pocket-bearer b is made of such material as will harmonize with the fabric of the trousers. The front edge cl of the elastic fabric is securely attached to the front portion e of a belt or strap of suitable material, as .of strong Holland, and the rear edge to the rear portion 71, thereof. The two rear portions of the belt or strap may be united in any convenient manner, as at i, and the ends of the front portions e are provided with suitable fastening devices, as a hook 7c and eye Z. Substantially triangular curtains m and n are secured to the belt and to the elastic web, as by sewing on the lines 0, p, q, and r, in such manner that any strain on the belt is distributed over the whole extent of the web below as well as in the line of the belt itself. The latter is secured to the inside of the waistband of the trousers between the waistband and the curtains either at different points or, preferably, as shown, by stitching belt, curtains, and trousers together on the lines 0 and p.
The modification of the usual pattern made necessary by the use of my device is slight and will be obvious. It will be found that when thetrousers are constructed as shown in the drawings thecost of manufacture will be reduced from ten to twenty-five cents on each pair by reason of the fact that the whole curtain can be stitched in by machine. By reason of the distribution of the strain upon the belt over the whole extent of the elastic web and the staying by the curtains of the pocket and all parts of the trousers about the hips the fit of the trousers is much improved and the comfort of the wearer is increased.
I claim as my invention The combination, in a pair of trousers having a divided waistband, of an elastic web, a divided inside belt having ends secured to the opposite edges of the upper portion of saidweb, a pocket supported by said Web, and substantially triangular curtains secured to said belt and to said web below the line of the belt, the belt being secured to the inside of the waistband of the trousers, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. J. RUPPREGHT.
