JOEL U. ADAMS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BODY-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,863, dated August 9, 1904.
Application led October l0, 1903. Serial No. 176,456. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOEL U. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder-Braces; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, attention being called to the accompanying drawings, with the reference characters marked thereon, which form also a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in shoulder-braces, being appliances which are worn for the purpose of curing or improving` certain defects in the shape or carriage of the upper part of the body. Pressure is applied by means of these appliances in certain positions and against certain parts of the body, the obj ect being to attain thereby the desired results. The pressure necessary is obtained from springs which, together with the means for holding them in place, constitute the appliance.
My present invention consists of the means, arrangement, and construction for holding the spring in position on the device.
In the following specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims, is found a full description of the invention, together with its arrangement and manner of use, which latter is also illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-M Figure l shows my improved shoulder-brace applied in position. Fig. 2 shows in edge View the shape of the spring with reference to the contiguous parts of the body against which it is applied.
The pressure which I apply is produced by a spring' 5, adjusted transversely across the back of the person wearing the appliance. It is shaped as shown in Fig. 2, it being curved so that at a it lies snugly against the middle portion of the back, (indicated by a line 5,) while toward its ends it recedes from the back, as shown at c c. To hold this spring' so in its position transversely across the back,
it is carried by means of a garment or pad of suitable fabric. 6 forms the body of this pad, provided at its upper end with shoulder-straps 7 7 and extending down suiliciently to allow for provision of a waistband or belt 8. When put on, these shoulder-straps are passed over the shoulders, around and down in front and back again under the armpits, being linally secured by suitable fastening devices or buckles 9. In order to preserve its position and shape, this pad may have the usual upright stays l0, as, for instance, shown in my former patent, No. 714,124. Spring 5 is held to this garment by means of pockets 11 1l, one at each of its ends, and a loop 12 in the center. It will now be seen that if the shoulder-straps are drawn down in front and attached, as shown, they will tend to draw the ends cc of the spring' against the back, or reversely, and what is the same the ends of the spring will exert an action on the shoulder-straps 4in a direction as shown by the arrows in Fig. 2. The desired effect is thereby obtained.
Having described my invention, I claim as newM l. A shoulder-brace consisting of a backpad, a spring arranged transversely thereto and across the back, pockets attached to the pad in which this spring is carried and means to hold this pad in position.
2. A shoulder-brace consisting of a suitable iiat and elongated spring curved to lie snugly across the back, a piece of suitable fabric fitted to cover the larger part of the back to which this spring is attached and for which it serves as a carrier to support it at a height across the back of the shoulders and attaching-straps connected to this fabric to hold the entire device in position on the body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my sig nature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOEL U. ADAMS.
