'BREAST-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,397, dated March 28, 1893.

Be it known that I, MARIE TUOEK, of New York city, in the county and Stateof New York, have invented a new and Improved Breast- Supporter, of which the followingis afull,clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved breast supporter, which is simple and durable in construction, designed to take the place of the usual corset, and to be worn more principally with loose dresses of the so called empire style.

The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied; and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the improvement with parts bro-ken out.

The improved breast supporter is provided with a plate A, made of sheet metal, cardboard or other suitable material and preferably covered with silk, canvas or other desirable fabric. The plate A is bent to conform to the shape of the human body at the front directly under the breasts, the ends of the plate terminating near the arm pits. The top edge of the plate A, is approximately of an inverted V-shape with the apex at the middle and extending between the breasts, and the sides of the V, are concaved to conform to the contour of the breasts at their bases or largest diameters.

On the top edge of the plate A, are formed the partial pockets B B made concave and adapted to engage the under side of the breasts so as to support the same in a proper position. The pockets are preferably made of silk, canvas or other fabric or material and bulge outward from the plate A as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. The plate A with the pockets B B is held in the proper place on the body by shoulder straps O and D, preferably arranged as shown in the drawings.

The shoulder strap 0, is rigidly secured to the plate A near one end thereof at C, then extends under one arm to the persons back, and up over the shoulder of the other arm to the front, to connect by hooks and eyes E E with the upwardly extending end A of the plate A. The other strap D is connected by hooks and eyes F F at D, to the plate A opposite the fastening of the strap 0, and then this strap D passes under the arm to the persons back, crosses the other shoulder strap 0 and passes over the other arm to the front, to connect by hooks and eyes G G with the upward curved end A of the plate A. The shoulder straps O and D are connected with each other at their point of crossing bya lacing H, or other means engaging eyelets I and I held in the straps G and D respectively.

A number of hooks E and G, are employed on the straps C and D respectively to hook the latter after they are drawn tight over the shoulders and back of the person, to cause the plate A to fit snugly upon the wearers body directly under the breasts, the latter being then supported in the outwardly and upwardly bulging pockets B and B. It is understood that the lacing H connecting the shoulder straps O and D with each other is adjusted in the eyelets I whenever it is necessary to adjust the ends of the straps C and D on different eyes.

This breast supporter is more especially designed to take the place of the ordinary corset, and is readily applied and adjusted to suit the convenience of the'wearer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A breast supporter, comprising a plate curved to conform to the wearers body at the front thereof, and partial pockets formed at the top of the said plate at opposite sides of its center to engage the under side of the breasts, and shoulder straps connected with the ends of the said plate and crossing each other at the back and adjustably connected together at the crossing, substantially as shown and described.

2. Abreast support, consisting of the curved plate A having the upwardly extending ends A A and provided with the pockets B B, and the straps O D, the strap 0 having one end secured to the plate at O and its other end to the end A, and the strap D having one IO gage the under side of the breasts, crossing shoulder straps adj ustably connected with the ends of the said plate, and a lacing for conmeeting the straps with each other at their point of crossing, substantially as shown and described.
