SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,457, dated March 13, 1900.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that we, CHESTORA O. CARR and JOHN HENRY CARR, citizens of the United States, residing at Hillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Appliance for Womens WVear, ofwhich the following is a specification.

I This invention relates to a garment-supporting appliance for women; and it has, primarily, for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device having means for positively supporting a plurality of skirts to prevent sagging at the back, while at the same time firmly holding the inner and outer waists of the wearer, so that the garments will maintain a correct position on the body and preserve the proper fit.

A further object of the invention is to associate the garment-supporting means with a harness for the body, whereby the harness will be held properly positioned by reason of the engagement of the skirts with the supporting device associated with the harness.

Broadly the device includes a member adapted to be worn on the body, in combination with a garment, of a hook and'eye, the respective parts of which are secured to said member and to said garment, and said hook being adapted to receive one or more articles of apparel interposed between said two lastmentioned parts, which latter are secured therein by the eye, and to secure a more perfeet union of the different parts we prefer to employ two hooks and eyes.

In its aspect as a combination garmentsupporting appliance the invention involves a novel construction of body-harness providing for the support of the abdomen and back, as well as for providing for bracing the shoulders and supporting the hose.

With these ends in view the invention consists in the novel combination of elements and in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

To enable others to understand the invention, we have illustrated the preferred embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 is a front View of the complete aptical sectional View showing the manner in which the supporting device is associated with the eyeleted body member to provide for supporting a plurality of skirts and also holding down an outer waist. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view showing the engagement of the hook member in an eyelet of the body member. Figs. 6 and 7 are details in perspective, respectively, of the hook and eye.

The device as a combination garment-supporting appliance includes in its organization a body member which is adapted to be Worn by the user and which is denoted by B, and it is represented as consisting of a harness which involves, preferably, in its construction an abdominal piece or supporter 2 of substantially-segmental shape connected by the flexible or elastic straps 3 with the part 4:, which fits against the small of the back, and these may be made from any suitable material, and the parts 2 and 4 are provided with depending tabs 5, to which the ends of a catamenial bandage can be attached in the familiar manner.

The straps or suspenders 6 are fastened to the abdominal supporter 2 and cross the front and pass over the shoulders and terminate at a point above the part 4, and the free ends of these straps are provided with eyelets 7 to re ceive'the lacing-cord 8, by which the relative position of the two straps where they fit against the back can be adjusted, and these straps carry the hooks by which the skirts are supported through the agency of eyes on said skirts adapted to engage-the hooks, and the different articles of apparel, such as outer and inner waists disposed between the skirt and the body, are held down by being folded or thrust into the hooks, being secured therein by the eyes.

The hooks to which reference has been made are denoted by 9 and the cooperating eye by 10, and each skirt is provided with two eyes, and all of these are preferably formed from wire, and each is in one piece. It will be understood, therefore, that each hook receives two eyes.
