Description
To alllwhom it may concern:
UNITED STATES;
MEYER .1. LEi-B RMAN, OF'NEW YOR -ii. Y.
I Taoussns;
Application filed October 1?,1903. Serial No. 17'7,l537.
Be it known that I, MEYER J. LEIBERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident o'f'New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to trousers, and 'more particularly to knee-pants for boys, and
has for its "more prominent obj ects'the equipment of such-an article of apparel-with permanently-secured, simple, and efficient stocking-supportingmeans,as'well as provision for relieving the buttons'of the waist from excessive'strains. i i
With the above and otherpurposes in view "the invention comprises trousers having per manently secured at the inner side thereof,
and preferably contiguous to the Waistband,
as well as the side seams thereof, depending webs provided at their lower portions with stocking-engagingdevices, a sliding clasp be- 7 mg employed 1n connection with each web for permitting the height at whioh the same suspends its engaging devices to beadjusted.
\ "For the purpose of relieving the waist portion of the trousers, as well as the waist-buttons,
from whatever strain might be incurred inv oonsequence'of attaching the webs'as stated 'I locate "on the inner side of said banda series I of yielding or elastic tabs or loops adapted to "engage the buttons of the waist.
'There' are other important features con- 1 nected-withthe invention, which, besides those alluded to, are 'clearlyset forth in the subsequent detailed descriptlon.
' In the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view lllustrating by dotted lines cer- 'tain features connected with my invention as being embodied in theknee-pants of a boy.
Fig. 2 is another perspective view showing, on an enlarged'scale, a pair of knee-pants equipped withmyimprovements." Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed View showing-a supporter and one of the buttoning-tabs and a portion of the waistband. Fig. 4 is a vertical edge 1 1 view showing more particularly the sliding familiar the conditions are such that in some.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented March 20,1906. i
instances a portion of the webbing encircles...
the limb and tends to interfere with-the free circulation of the blood. A further 'obj-ec.-.. ,tion to this type of supporter is thatafter a period of service it is liable to become permanently distended, and thus prevent its proper I retention on the limb. Moreover, the inti- -mate contact of the webbing with the limb subjects the former to the perspiration and results in its becomingweakened by rotting. Other forms of supporters have avoided .many of the objections noted by employing girth or shoulder members from which the supporting-webbings de ilend. These latter type of supporters are, oWever, 'eXpensive and cumbersome. By'my improvements I obviate all the difficulties noted and at the same time provide for efiioiently supporting the stockings in a sim le, positive, and conveni'ent, as well as hig y comfortable, manner.
To the inner side of a pair of knee-pants, and
preferably atthe waistband Athereof, are sea cured the upper ends of upper depending webs or strips B of elastic webbing, each of said webs being disposed to hang at a point contiguous with the side seam of the garment. These webs constitute the upper suspending medium of the supporters. It will be convenient for each supporter to include provision whereby the web thereof can be shortened lugengaging devices at different heights.
he provision illustrated for this pur ose consists of a clasp 0, comprising a slotte de pending portion a, with which the end of one of thefolds of the web is permanently attached by stitching, as indicated at c, the web then continuing downward and at its lowerturn passing through awire loop I) and then ascending between said plate and a pivmounted in ears a integrally projecting from the plate one of the 'facesof sald lever being serrated to insure its positlvely engaging with the adj acent portion of the web; The upper extremity of the ascending part of the web is or lengthened in order to sustain the stock oted lever 0 carried thereby andwhich is IOO attached to the garment contiguous to its waistband A, as previously referred to. By
this means it will be comprehended that by disengaging the lever c and swinging it from the. ascending part of the web the clasp 0 may be'shifted up or down upon such ascending part to shorten or lengthen the web and such adjustment maintained by restoring the lever o in engagement therewith. I Li IIO "slot the contracted lower portion of the latter will pinch and positively maintain an engagement with such fabric, particularly when upward tension is exerted thereon.
Secured on the inner side of the waistband- A, and preferably equidistantly arranged, are a series of elastic tabs E, which are preferably each formed of a short length of elastic webbing, having portions e 6, arranged arallel, and an intermediate portion 6, f0 ded over, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The parallel portions include the ends of the length of webbing. Each of the tabs thus formed is placed against the waistband, so that such ends are tucked under the lower edge thereof previous to the stitching of this portion of the band. 7 Now by stitching such lower edge portion as indicated by a it will be readily comprehended that loops or eyes 6 are formed, adapted for engagement with the appropriately-located buttons on the waist. The folds e are stitched to the parallel portions 6, thus leaving the upper parts of the tabs free for manipulation in the operation of buttoning to the waist. I prefer that one of these tabs shall be secured to the waistband at the point of the intersection of the latter by the rear inner seam fold a, which thus serves to reinforce the connection of the rear tab and qualifies it for-resisting the extra strain usually incurred at this portion of the garment.
From the description thus far it will be readily understood that after having preliminarily adjusted the garment-supporters at both sides with due regard for the length required for the same in properly supporting the stockings when the garment is in position the pants are then partly drawn on and the wearer is enabled to properly engage the upper portions of the stocking with the slotted plates. The pants are completely drawn on and the tabs then buttoned to the waist, after which the usual buttoning operations are effected. It will therefore be seen that the garment-supporters in my invention constitute a permanent feature of the knee-pants and that all stress or strain imposed upon the same during wear is borne by the pants in the vicinity of the waistband, severe tugs or pulls on the latter being relieved to a considerable extent by the presence of the yielding tube E. It will further be appreciated that the normal positions of the webbing of the supporters during wear will be such as to preclude such webbing being maintained for any length of time in any particular position in contact with the person of the wearer, and hence the liability of the webbing creating discomfort or becoming injured through perspiration will be avoided.
The improved garment is not only simple and comparatively inexpensive as compared with other articles of the same character, but will be extremely useful and readily adjusted.
While I have illustrated and described the permanent arrangement of hose-supporters and waist-engaging tabs as being embodied in connection with boys knee-pants, it will be obvious that such features may be similarly employed in connection with the trousers of older persons.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
The combination with a pair of knee-pants having an interior waistband A, stitched to the top edge thereof, of stocking-suspending mediums comprising upper depending strips B, each formed of elastic webbing folded upon itself to form a loop, the end of the rear member of each loop being secured between the material of the pants and the waistband by the stitches securing said band, clasps C adjustable on each of said rear members and to which the ends of front members are connected, rings 1) suspended by said loops, lower elastic webs or strips suspended from each ring, each lower web havin its ends diverging and stocking-engaging devices D secured to the ends of the last-mentioned elastic webs, substantially as described.
Signed at city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 9th day of October, A. D. 1903.
MEYER J. LEIBERMAN.
