.C. H. SCHOPBACH COMBINED CORSET AND BRASSIERE Filed Feb. s, 1925 Q burg. M
Patented June 30, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. SCHOPBACH, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL CORSET COMPANY, AURORA, ILLINOIS, A. CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CORSET AND BRASSIERE.
Application filed February 8, 1923. "Serial No. 617,685.
' To all whom it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Sonor- BACI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Cook and State oi Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combined Corsets and Brassieres, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to wearing apparel, and has special reference. to corsets and brassieres combined in one garment.
The primary object of the present invention is an improved arrangement and construction of parts, whereby the function of a corset and of a brassiere may be. utilized in one garment; whereby the back of the wearer will be substantially covered by a unitary section of the garment, the abdominal portion of the body willbe covered by front-l'astenii'ig, corset-like parts which are adjustably yielding and also supporting, and
" the upper portion of the body will be covered by the parts functioning as a brassiere whereby the mammae of the wearer will be properly supported and yet permit of the free movement of the body desired in dancing and athletic exercises; and whereby a smooth, unbroken outer surface from top to bottom of the garment is maintained, to insure the proper fit of a dress or other garment worn thereover, and any tendency to ride up on the body of the wearer is prevented.
To these ends, the invention consists in the devices and combination of devices herein illustrated, described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In that form of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings:
Fig. l.is a front view of a combined corset and hrassiere constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 2 is an inside view of the same, opened out.
In the drawing, the back A is composed of seven vertically disposed sections indicated as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, all except the central section 4 being of theusual corset material, and secured together along their vertical side margins by stitching, in a familiar manner. The central section 4 may be of similar corset material, but I prefer to construct it as shown, composed of a plurality of'vertical and cross strips, leaving intervening ventilating spaces 8. This ventilated back section is fully disclosed and claimed in my United States Letters Patent, Reissue No. 13,698, of March 10, 1914, and therefore need not be further described.
On the inside of the corset back A, and
by me'ans'of cloth strips 9, I form pockets,
in the upper portions of which, only, I place bones indicated by the dotted lines-10. It will be noted that the bones extend from the top margin of the back A partway over the hips.
The back sections 1 and 2 have an extension 11, at their lower ends adjacent to the strip 9, to which is secured the familiar garter strap 12. A similar extension 13 on the sections (5, 7 carries a garter strap 12.
The corset member as a whole, comprises in addition to a portion of the back, two front extension members B, B, each comprising an adjustable section 14 of elastic or other suitable material, joined along one margin to the sectionsl and 7 of the back,
respectively, and a section 15 of'corset cloth material joined along one of its margins to the front margin of the section 14. On the inside of onesection 15 is avertical strip '16 containing a plurality of hooks 17 and on the other section 15 is a similar strip 18 provided with eyes 19. 'When the two extension members B are brought together over the abdominal region, hooks and .eyes are engaged and the parts firmly secured to-' gether.
)t' course, it will be understood that these parts may be secured together by the familiar eyelets and corset lacings, instead of by hooks and eyes. When lacings are used, the elastic sections 14 may be dispensed with, as the necessary adjustment can, in that event, be secured by-the lacings, On the inside of each extension member B, and somewhat near its front margin, is a tape 20 forming a vertically disposed pocket for a bone or steel indicated by the dotted lines at 21.
The extension members B, B, are of such length that the upper edges 22 will come approximately to the waist line of the wearer. I i
The brassiere member designated as a whole at C, is secured by stitching at its upper side margins to the upper side margins of the back sections 1 and 7. i shown, the securing connection between the brassiere and the section 7 is by means of hooks .23 on the brassiere member and eyes 24 on the section 7. Manifestly, these parts may be secured by sewing, in the usual way, and the brassiere centrally opened and provided with hooks and eyes similar to the arrangement shown for the corset extension members B, B. The central, lower portion of ber O and the corset member extensions B, B,
are so constructed that when the garment is placed upon the wearer, the brassiere member must overlie the corset member. To this end it will be noticed that the length of the side margin of the brassiere member C is such that said side margin overlies the top side margin of the elastic section 14 of the section B, as indicated at 27 Thus it will be impossible for the user to place the gar ment upon herself improperly, without dis torting the same.
It will be seen that by the construction thus described, I have produced a combined corset and brassiere, the corset part being provided with such stiffening as is desirable to support the body and yet not interfere with the free movements thereof, while the brassiere portion is supported at the top by the shoulder straps and held down at the bottom by the garter straps in such manner .as to prevent wrinkling, and preserves the outer surface in a smooth condition so that outer garments may be properly fitted thereupon.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combination corset and brassiere the diaphragm and embrace the abdomen and provided with an integral vertically extending rear portion adapted to embrace the wearers back, and a brassiere portion permanently secured to one side of said vertically extending rear portion and detachably engaging the other and adapted'to embrace the wearers bosom, said brassiere having a depending portion adapted to overlie the abdomen-embracing portion of the corset.
2. A combination corset and brassiere comprising a vertically reinforced rear corset portion adapted to embrace the wearers back from arm pit to arm pit at its upper extremity and provided adjacent its lower extremity with forwardly extending reinforced portions adapted to encircle the wearers body below the diaphragm and embrace the abdomen interengaging fasteners on said forwardly extending reinforced portions, and'a brassiere portion permanently secured to one side of said rear portion adjacent said upper extremity and adapted to extend across the wearers bosom and detachably or engage the upper extremity of the rear portion at the opposite side.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of February, 1923.
