Description

Feb. 12, 1952 H. LEE
HALTER AND BRASSIERE Filed July 26, 1948 INVENTOR.
Patented Feb. 12, 1952 HALTER AND BRASSIERE Helen Lee, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application July 26, 1948, Serial No.40,.721
3 Claims.
My present invention pertains to the art of wearing apparel for women and comprises an improved form of halter or brassire primarily designed to be used in conjunction with shorts or trousers, or, under some conditions, quite well adapted to be incorporated into a bathing suit.
The important feature of novelty of my invention resides in the provision of a construction of arment of the class described which is so'made as. to be adjustable to fit women of different sizes. In fact, the adjustable features of the article of my invention enable the same to be used by women who have frames measuring 32 to 42 respecting bust measurements.
Incidental to the construction of the halter or brassire of my invention, I note that another special feature of the same resides in the provision of a novel cover member which extends over the breast pockets of the article and which provides for a peculiar central adjusment intermediate said pockets.
Another special feature of my invention resides in the peculiar manner in which the body straps are used for connecting rear extensions of the breastpockets to the central support part of the brassiere section of the article, with a view to facilitating. the variable adjustments of the halter to bodies of different sized women or girls.
A full. understanding of my invention will be had upon reference to the following detail description, in conjunction with the illustration in the annexed drawing.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a general perspective view showing my invention as it is used when applied to the person of a female.
Figure 2 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 1 but illustrating the manner of arrangement of certain parts of the halter looking toward the rear of the person.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken about on the line .33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a general perspective view of the halter illustrating the central portion of the cover member for the breast pockets broken away and turned outwardly so as to bring out the arrangement of the various eyelets that coact with the central section between the breast pockets for enabling certain adjustments to be made; also showing adjustable features of the body encircling straps having hook connection with said central section.
Figure 5 is an enlarged view showing more clearly the details of the front central members of the halter, parts broken away.
Referring now to the drawings, and specifically describing the, invention, it is noted that a halter or brassire assembly such as depicted comprises a center front section I, at opposite sides of which are connected the breast pockets or cups 2, the term section being used descriptively and not in the sense of limitation. Said section I is stitched to the pockets 2 along the curved lines 3 and the pockets 2 may be provided by forming darts 4 on the inside thereof generally vertically thereof, and other relatively horizontally extending darts not shown, to afford the necessary concavity for the pocket formation, this being known practice. Each pocket 2 at its outermost portion has a rear extension 5 which tapers to apoint of termination at the back of the wearer, and has attached thereto a strap 6 adjustable by means of the buckle I. The strap is looped for providing the buckle adjustment, and in the loop is supported and attached the hook 8. It is contemplated that the straps 6 shall cross one another at a medial point at the back of the wearer, see Figure 2, and thence pass around to the front of a person so that the hooks 8 may be engaged with eyelets 9 on the outer face of the front center section I.
Shoulder straps ID are also provided and connect at II with the upper front edge portions of the pockets 2. Theseshoulder straps l0 are likewise adjustable, having the buckles l2 for that purpose, and at their rear ends the straps ID are adapted to extend downwardly from over the shoulders of a person to points of attachment ad jacent to the rear terminals of th tapered extensions 5.
A unique feature of my invention lies in providing a cover member which extends transversely over the breast pockets or cups 2 and is preferably made in fabric sections IS, the cover member being generally denoted A. At the center of the cover member A the material of the sections [3 tapers somewhat from the mid-points of the sec!- tions at which the straps ID are attached, and at the inside of the seam, or connection, I4, of the cover sections I3 there is applied by stitching or other fastening means a strip [5 carrying a plura-lity of eyelets It. The number of these eyelets It may be somewhat varied, but more, than two will preferably always be employed.
A downwardly extending hook I! is attached to the uppermost portion .of the central section I of the article at the outer side thereof and the purpose of this hook is to engage a selected one of the eyelets l6 of the cover section.
The shoulder straps I0 at the point of their attachment to the upper edge of the pockets 2 are attached by the sam stitching to the portions of the cover member A overlying said edges of the pockets.
From the point of attachment of the straps H] with each pocket 2 and cover section l3, outwardly, the cover section is stitched to the upper portion of each pocket 2.
The shoulder straps It! being connected to the pockets 2, and the pockets at their lower portions and inner sides being connected to the center section I, by hooking th hook I! in different ones of the eyelets l6, variability in the adjustments of the pockets for different sized busts is obtained. In a sense, therefore, the said adjustment between the hook I1 and eyelets it affords an enlargement vertically of the pockets. In other Words, this deals with the adjustment of the pocket sizes vertically of the body.
In regard to the adjustable fit of the article laterally of the body, it will be apparent that when the straps 6 are passed from the back of the body to the front and the hooks 8 engaged with the eyelets 9, various adjustments may be obtained by the buckles l of said straps, and variable fitting advantage is derived to ensure that the article will fit properly laterally of the user.
In relation to the said adjustable connections including the eyelets l6 and the hooks l1 and the hooks 8 of the straps 6 and the eyelets 9, the cover member A is designed for fullness by being flared, with tucking in the center alongthe line H previously referred to.
The method of applying the halter and brassiere combination article to the body will be clear from the drawings. The arms are passed through the shoulder straps ID in the usual manner and said straps properly adjusted to fit. The cover member is now adjusted in place partly by the straps previously referred to, and with an associated adjustment of the pockets 2 incident to the hooking of the hook I! in a suitable one of the eyelets l6, dependent upon the fit required for the particular user. Thereupon the straps B will be passed from the back of the body to the front and the hooks 8 engaged in the eyelets 9, the straps then being pulled up to the desired adjustment incident to the use of the buckles I. Necessarily, the tautening of the straps 6 exerts a tension on the rear extensions of the bust, pockets 2,
so as to give contour and make for smoothness of fit of the pockets 2 in conjunction with the other features mentioned. Additionally, the strap hooks 8 engage relatively with eyelets 0n the bust line, adjusting the straps close beneath the bust,
gnu: affording support and lower contour for the It is notable that my apparel article is not limited solely to use as hereinbefore indicated, since the principles of construction are readily adapted for brassieres under dresses designed for street or evening wear. The body of the article, more over, may be employed with or without the straps l0 under some conditions depending on the kind of dress worn thereover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
