BUST FORMER AND SUPPORTER.
Application filed October 20, 1925. Serial No. 63,687.
This invention relates to a class of With these and other objects in view, the womens wearing apparel. invention will be hereinafter more fully de- My invention has for its object primarily scribed with reference to the accompanying to provide a supporter or brassiere designed drawings forming a part of this specification to be worn by women for holding the breasts in which similar characters of reference in- 55 in comfortable and healthful positions as dicate corresponding parts in all the views, well as serving to retain their natural shapes and will then be pointed out in the claims by preventing the breasts from sagging at the end of the description. which with some women cause a strain upon In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevathe respiratory organs and at times also tion of one form of bust former and sup- 6 causes deformities of these parts, the sup-. porter embodying my invention. porter being of an adjustable form so that Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of one of the v I the wearer may raise or lower the breasts at halves of the garment. suitable positions, in order to avoid the dan- Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View ger of injury from wearing types of low cut showing an elevation of the rear parts of 65 corsets which are not provided with bust the garment, and supporting parts. The invention consists Fig. 4: is an enlarged view showing plans essentially of a'body of somewhat the shape of the sections of one of the halves of the of a band divided into two corresponding body of the garment. halves, each composed of attached flexible The bust former and supporter or bras- 7 sections of shapes whereby an approximately siere has a band like body 10 which is dicup-shaped concavity having a tapered free vided into two corresponding halves 11 and upper edge is formed'in the centralpart of 12 which may be made of lace, silk, cotton each section for receiving the breasts of the cloth or other appropriate flexible material. wearer. Extendinglengthwise of each half Each of the halves 11 and 12 is preferably. 7 of the body crosswise of the lower portion formed with a tapered front end 13 which of its concavity are spaced parallel strips or terminates with a straight edge and with a flexible members for supporting the busts, tapered rear end 14 which may be of less and on the opposed ends of the halves of the width than the front end portion. Each of body are provided means to allow the halves the halves may be composed of a suitable 80 to be laced or otherwise fastened together so number of sections, as 15, 16, 17, 18, of that the circumference of the body may be shapes that when stitched together provide varied. A movable reducer is arranged on in the front portion of each half a concavity the upper edge of the concavity of each half or pocket, as 19, 19, having an approxiof the body for serving to form the breasts mately cone-shaped upper free edge 20. The 86 of the wearer by contracting the circumferconcavities, 19 and 19 are relatively arences of the concavities, and to the rear end ranged as well asbeing of sizes adapted to parts of the halves of the body are held one receive the breasts of a woman when the garof the ends of shoulder straps having their ment is worn, and extending from the front other ends detachably fastened to the re end to the rear end lengthwise of each half 90 ducers of the concavities at their apices so of the body crosswise of the concavities 19 that with the movements of the wearer the and 19 especially their lower portions are concavities will yieldingly expand and conspaced parallel strips or members 21. These tract according to the pressure on the breasts strips are of relative lengths so that they of the wearer. conform to the exterior curvature ofthe con- 96 A further object of the invention is to cavities for serving to effectually support provide a bust former and supporter of a especially the lower parts of the breasts of simple, efficient and durable construction the wearer of the garment. The front ends of the halves 11 and 12 of the band like body 10 may be detachably attached together by providing on the binding strips 22 and 22 hooks and eyes or any other well known fastening devices, as 25, and in the ends of the tabs 23 and 23 are eyes for passage of lacers, as 27, whereby the tabs may be adjustably laced together so that the circumference of the body may be reduced or enlarged, in order to permit the garment to comfortably lit the wearer.
Protruding from the diverging upper edge 20 of the concavity of each half of the body 10 of the garment in spaced proximity to the apex of the concavity are sets of spaced loops 28 and 28 and to the central parts of the diverging edges of the concavity of each half are held the ends of a movable reducer preferably in the form of a draw string, as 29, which passes through the sets of loops 28 and 28 of the respective half so as to embrace the apex of the concavity. By then moving the parts of the reducers or draw strings 29 upwardly or downwardly the circumferences of the concavities will be contracted or enlarged accordingly so that these parts of the garment will snugly fit yieldingly the breasts of the wearer.
To the upper edges of the tabs 23 and 23 of the halves of the body are held one of the ends of two shoulder straps 30 and 30 both of which are of lengths so that their other ends terminate in proximity to the apices of the cone-shaped edges of the concavities 19 and 19 of the halves. On the second ends of the straps 30 and 30 are provided strings or ribbons 31, and these strings are releasably tied to the reducers or draw strings 29 at the apices of the concavities of the halves of the body. The straps 30 and 30 are of lengths so that they may be disposed over the shoulders of the wearer of the garment, and when the garment is applied to a woman the front ends of the halves of the body. may be attached together by releasably fastening the devices 25, after which the body is arranged on the wearer so that the breasts will be seated in the ooncavities 19 and 19 The body 10 is the breasts will be comfortably supported as well as their shapes being properly retained, in order to obviate tendency to be-. come deformed and avoid tending to strain the respiratory organs of the wearer by sagging of the breasts. Moreover, breasts will also be prevented. from liability to injury by being held against undue pressure in event of the woman wearing low cut corsets which are not provided with bust supporting parts.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bust former and supporter, comprising a band like body divided into two corresponding halves each having a substantially cup-shaped concavity intermediate its ends, spaced strips extending across the concaved portion of each half of the body crosswise of its concavity, fastening devices on the front opposed ends of the halves of the body for detachably connecting the halves, spaced 100 s extending from the central part of eac side of the concavity of each half of the body, a draw string member movable on each half of the body and embracing the upper edge of the concavity of each half as well as being movably disposed through the loops of the half, and an arm strap having one of its ends held to the rear part of each half of the body and having its other end detachably fastened to the draw string at the central parlt of the concavity of each half of the or y.
2. A bust former and supporter, comprising a band like body divided into two corresponding detachably connected halves, each having in its front portion a substan tially cup-shaped concavity with an approximately cone-shaped upper edge, a draw string member movable on the cone-shaped edge of the concavity of each half of the body, and an arm strap having one of its ends held to the rear part of each half of the body and having its other end detachably fastened to the draw string at the central part of the concavity of each half of the body.
3. A bust former and supporter, comprising a band like body divided into two corresponding detachably connected halves, each having in its front portion a substantially cup-shaped concavity with an approximately cone-shaped up per edgegspaced strips extending across the front portlon and across the concavity of each half of the body, a draw string member movable on the 5 cone-shaped edge of the concavity of each half of the body, and an arm strap having one of its ends held to the rear part of each half of the body and having its other end detachably fastened to the drawstring at the central part of the concavity of each 10 half of the body.
