A. RoTHsTElN SHOULDER STRAP Filed April 1, 1927 Patented oci.I 16,1928.
UNITED STATES ANNA ROTI-ISTEIN, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOULDER STRAP.
Application filed. April 1, 1927. Serial No. 180,210.
My invention relates to improvements in shoulder straps such as those that are designed to support womens underclotliing, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangementsh crein described and claimed. n
Shoulder straps for supporting underclothes such as brassieres. slips, rand the like, have been used in which the supporting strap is merely a band, such asia ribbon or the like. Supports of this lrind do not give freedom of movement, and it has been proposed to insert elastic band portions in order that theshoulder strap itself may give to accommodate the movement of the wearer. These elastic bands must be sewed in, and in those cases where the bands are used there is liability of irrita.-
tion to thebody of the wearer where such ous parts ofthe device, the operation thereof seams come in contact with the flesh.
An object'of my invention is to provide a shoulder strap which has the advantage of being resilient, so that it may stretch to accommodate the movement of the wearer, but which will not tend to chafe or otherwise prove uncomfortable to the wearer. y
A further object is to provide a shoulder strap which is simple in'construction, and in which the elastic portion is provided with a'covering which permits the elongation of the elastic portion and at the same time is comfortable to wear. Y n f Other objects, and advantages will appear in the following specification, and thenovel `features of the invention will be particularlyy pointedV out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in theV accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis application, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the manner in which shoulder straps constructed according to my invention are worn,
Figure 2 is a face view of a shoulder strap,
Figure 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure t is a similar section showing the strap in its stretched condition.`
Tn carrying out my invention, I' make use of a band l of an)7 suitable material. This may be a ribbon or afabric band ofany approved material. It is preferably provided with buttonholes 2 and 3 by means of which the strap may be adjustably attached to the garment to be supported'.
Y. Near one end of the band 11 provi-de an elastic webbing l. One end of this webbing is secured to the band at 5 and the other at 6.
The elastic vwebbing is covered by material 7 I which is shirred as shown in Figure 3. This material may be part of the ribbon which formsV the major portion of the band on one side with a similar shirred piece on the other side. The end portion of the shirred members 7 are preferably brought Vtogether and stitched to form Van attachment piece 8 'which is provided with a buttonhole 9. As will be seen from Figure 2, the elastic webbing is preferably of smaller width than the width of the band. This provides room for a row of stitching 10 on each side of the elastic portion sothat thelatter is entirely closed.
From the foregoing description of the varimay be readily understood. The shoulder strap is connected toa garment such as a brassire 11 by means of the ` buttonholes 2 or 3, while the opposite end is connected to the back of the brassire by means of the buttonhole 9. This brings the shirred portion at the rear in a position where it does not bear as closely-` on the body as 'it would up higher where the straps pass over the shoulders.
Now when the movementof the body as in i stooping or reaching tends to exert tension on the shoulder straps, the latterwill give, due to the elastic portion as shown in Figure l.' `The shirred portion of the device will keep the seams away from the iesh normally, and will permit the use of the straps in comfort, since there is no liability ofV chang, as stated. f
T claim:
A detachable shoulder strap comprising a single band, one end of said band being folded to provide a double portion, and an elastic portion disposed Within the double portion,` said double portion being shirred to provide a covering for.V the elastic portion and to permit an elongation of the latter, one end of the folded portion vbeing disposed between the elastic portion and the shoulder strap and secured to the shoulder strap, the `other endv of said folded portion comprising an attache ing .portion extending beyond the elastic portion and provided with a buttonhole.
`ANNA ROTHSTEIN.
