To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DEAN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padded Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularlyto knit fabric garments, such as jerseys which are worn by players of various athletic games and which require pads to protect salient parts of the body, such as the shoulders and elbows.

The invention hasfor its object to enable a pad to be applied to any desired part or parts of a jersey, or other like garment, either while the garment is in place on the wearers body or while the garment is not in use, the pad being capable of such adjust able application aswill enable it to suit the taste or peculiarities of form of the wearer of the garment. j i

The invention is embodied in a flexible pad adapted to conform to the shoulders, elbows and other salient parts of the human body, and provided with a flexible marginal flange projecting from the inner side of the pad, said flange having holes to receive a lacing cord, whereby it may be attached to any desired part of a knitted garment, such as a jersey, the lacing cord being threaded through the holes of the flange an through meshes of the portions of the garment to which the pad is applied, this threading operation being performed, if desired, whilethe garment is on the wearers body.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pad embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a padded jersey embodying my invention.

The same numerals of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In carrying out my invention, I construct a flexible pad adapted to conform to the shoulders, elbows and other salient portions of the human body, the pad being preferably composed of a flexible outer member 12 of leather or other suitably strong and durable material, and an inner member 13 which is also flexible, and may be composed of strong vtextile fabric, and 13 being stitched together near their the two members 12' margins to form a bag and a suitable cushion 14 contained in said bag, and interposed between the members 12 and 13, the cushioning material being preferably curled hair, such as is used for mattress fillings, although any other suitable material may be employed.

The pad is provided with a flexible marginal flange 15, which is preferably the marginal portion of the outer member 12, extended beyond the line of stitches 16 which unite the two members 12 and 13 and inclined crosswise relatively to the inner member 13. The flange 15 is provided with a series of holes 17, which are preferably reinforced by eyelets, and are adapted to receive a lacing cord 18. The inner side of the pad and the flange 15 together form a recess, the surfaces of which are flexible, and are adapted to conform to a shoulder or an elbow of the human body. The pad constructed as described, is adapted to be secured to a knitted garment 19, such as a jersey, by placing the inner side of the pad upon the portion of the garment to be protected, and threading the lacing cord 18 through the holes 17 in the flange of the pad, and through meshes in the portions of the garment on which the flange bears, the lacing cord being provided with suitable metallic or other stiffening tips, whereby it may be conveniently passed through the meshes of the garment. This attaching operation may be performed while the garment is in place on the wearers body, so that the pad may be adjusted to the exact position desired by the wearer. The flexibility of the pad and of the flange and the inclination of the flange relatively to the inner member enable the pad and flange to conform accurately to the part of the body to which they are applied, the flange being puckered and drawn inwardly by the tension of the lacing cord, so that it closely fits the body.

The general shape of the pad will depend on the part of the body which it is designed to protect, a shoulder pad being usually of somewhat different outline and area from an elbow pad.
