SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,415, dated June 8, 1886.

Beit known that I, GEORGE E. ZELTMACH- ER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvelnenti n Adj ustable Belt-Olasps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i

Reference is to be had to thc accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a front elevation of one of my improved belt-clasps, shown as applied to a beltand unclasped, the middle part of the belt being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional edge View of the same, taken through the line or x, Fig. I. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same, showing the reverse side.

rlhe object of this invention is to provide belt-clasps constructed ln such a manner that they can be readily adjusted to shorten or lengthen the belts, which will remain securely in place when adjusted, and which will not disfigure or otherwise injure the belts.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the beltclasp, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

A represents a belt, which may be made of c any suitable material.

The hooked plate of the clasp is formed of a back plate, B, of oval or other desired form, and having a inetal binding, O, closed down upon its edge. Upon the forward side ofthe plate B is placed a plate, D, of the saine material as the belt A and of the saine shape as the said plate B. The plate D is secured in place by the forward part of the binding` O, which is bent down over and clamps the edge of the said plate.

The hooked plate B O D is secured permanently to the belt A by points E, cut out of the back plate, B, bent out to pass through the belt A, and then closed down upon the said belt.

The hooked plate BO D is. further secured in place by the hook F, which is cutout of the back plate, B, is bent in hook form, and passed through a slit in the belt A, so that the said hook F can be hooked into a socket or loop, G, formed in the forward middle part of the front plate, H, of the buckle,to fasten the belt around the waist of the wearer.

I do not claim the above-described buckle as ot' my invention, as there is nothing new in its construction.

Upon the end of the front plate, H, are formed perforated lugs I, to receive the end pivots of the back plate, J, of the buckle. The rear edge of the plate J is bent inward at right angles, and is serrated to cause it to take a rm hold upon the belt A. The forward middle part of the plate J is extended to serve as a lever in fastening and unlastening the buckle, and as a stop to prevent the pivoted plate J from being turned back and unfastened by a strain 'upon the belt A. Upon the outer side of the front plate, H, just in the rear of the lugs I, is formed a bead, K, forming a groove upon the innerv side of thesaid plate, into which the belt is pressed by the serrated edges of the lever-plate J, to give the said serrated edge a firmer hold upon the said belt. The bead K also serves as a stop to the hook F, to prevent the said hook from working out of its socket G and becoming accidentally unfastened.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The conibination,with the hooked plate, of the buckle comprising a front plate, H, formed with the bead K, lugs I I, and araised socket, G, in front of the bead, and the bent leverplate pivoted to thelugs,and having the clamping-edge over the groove formed by the bead, substantially as set forth.

2. The buckle comprising the front plate, H, formed at its forward end with a raised socket, G, a bead, K, extending across the plate, and lugs I I at the ends of the bead, and the bent lever-plate J, pivoted to the lugs, and having its clamping-edge over the groove, substantially as set forth.

3. rlhe buckle comprising the front plate, H, having the transverse bead K extending across the plate on its outer side, forming a groove on its inner side, a socket, G, the lugs I I at the ends of the bead, and the bent levenplate J, pivoted to the lugs, substantially as set forth.
