APPLICATION FILED MAR. l8, I916.

Application filed March 18, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD K. LATHROP,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fasteners for the ends of a body belt for overalls and the like, and an object of the invention is to provide a novel type offastener which will take the place of the buckles now in use on such de vices, and which will securely fasten the ends of the belt or overall strap, and of such construction that the same can be cheaply manufactured, will be durable and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fastener detached from operative position, and showing the clamping lever in closed position,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, taken through Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a forward end view of the fastener,
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the fastener, showing the modified form of locking means for the lever,
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a rectangular shaped plate 1, formed of metal, and designed to be applied to the body of the overalls or to one end of a belt, and is provided at its ends with depending prongs 2, adapted to penetrate the article to which it is applied and to be bent inwardly, so as to secure the plate in position. The plate 1 is provided with a central longitudinal slot 3, and the oppo- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Serial No. 85,166.
site longitudinal edges of the slot are provided with spaced and opposed inwardly extending projections 4:, the inner terminals of which are bent upwardly to provide the opposed series of prongs 5, which extend at right angles to the plate 1. The rear end of the plate 1 is provided with a pair of spaced sleeves 6, which are secured to the plate in any suitable manner.
Associated with the plate 1 is a bar 7, which is of a length slightly exceeding the length of the plate 1, and has one end thereof provided with a transversely extending connecting member 8, which has its opposite ends rotatably received by the sleeves 6. WVhen the lever 7 is in operative position, the same extends across the opening 3 and between the opposed series of prongs 5, as shown in Fig, 1 of the drawing. The forward end of the plate 1 is slitted transversely to provide the locking tongues 9, the opposed ends of the tongues 9 being bent downwardly and curved inwardly, as shown at 10, to provide locking terminals for the free end of the bar 7 when the latter is in operative position.
In the view shown in Fig. 4 the plat-e 1 has only one locking tongue, which extends upwardly and has the free end thereof extending downwardly to )rovide a harbor for the free end of the bard? when the latter is in operative position. In use, one end of the overall strap, or if the device is associated with a belt, one end of the belt is passed over the opposed series of prongs 5. The bar 7 is then lowered on the end of the strap or belt, causing a portion of the end of the strap or belt to be forced through the opening 3 and resulting in the prongs 5 penetrating the end of the strap or belt, the free end of the bar being then secured by the locking tongue or tongues at the adjacent end of the plate 1,
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
A garment fastener comprising a plate having relatively spaced straight rows of prongs extending from one side thereof, a
' ing adapted when in operative position to EDWARD K. LATHROP.
bar of uniform thickness throughout its length pivoted to said side of the plate at one end of the rows of prongs, said bar belie in close proximity to said side of the plate between the rows of prongs andin- Wardly of the outer ends of the prongs, and a bar engaging latch carried by said side of Witnesses:
