W. R. MAGRAW. HORSE BLANKET FASTBNBR.
No; 441,249. Patented Nov. 25,1890.
w: cams PETERS co. mbYo-uma, WASHINGTON. n. c.
UNITE 2o STATES \VILLIAM REED 'MAGRAW, OF STRIOKERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HORSE-BLANKET FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 441,249, dated November 25, 1890.
7 Application filed September 16, 1890. Serial No. 365,155l (Nb model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM REED MA- GRAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Strickersville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Horse-Blankets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in horse-blanket retaining devices, and it has more particular reference to that class of retaining devices which are intended for use in securing the blanket in place upon the horse when the animal is in the stable.
The invent-ion has for its object to simplify and cheapen the construction and to render more serviceable in operation this class of appliances.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar features of construction, which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invent-ion is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a side view of a blanket-retainer embodying my improvements. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, in which the parts are shown as occupying the positions they will assume when in actual use.
The device consists of a body portion A, which is made of a single thickness of heavy leather, cut upon an arc of a circle, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The leather is split from each end of the body portion A inwardly for a sufficient distance to form the straps to a and b b. \Vithin suitable loops 0, formed at the ends of the said straps a and b, are retained the looped ends (I of the blanketfasteners D, said fasteners consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form the enlarged substantially arrow-head-shaped portion 01 body portion (1 and loop (l, the arrow-head cl being adapted to engage an opening e provided for the purpose in the tag e, secured to the edge of the blanket. I11 order to permit the fasteners to be adjusted to secure blank ets of various sizes, I provide each of the tags.
6 with a series of openings 6', as shown in the drawings.
In use the body portion A is placed between the thighs of the animal, the straps a and I) being passed around the thigh and secured to the tags upon the blanket, said tags being secured to the blanket at the proper places.
The blanket may be fastened at its forward end by a similar securing device placed between the forward legs of the animal.
It will be observed that when in position for use the body portion of the fastener will be turned upon its edge, thus presenting the flat faces of the strap to the thigh and avoiding injury which would otherwise be caused by frictional contact with the strap.
Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isc 1. The herein-described device for securing horse-blankets, the same consisting of the body portion A, made of a single thickness of leather, the ends of which are split to form the straps to and b, and the blanket-fasteners D, each consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form the substantially arrow-head portions (1 adapted to engage openings in the blanket, and at their opposite ends having loops to engage the free ends of the straps a and 19, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described blanket-holder, the
same consisting of the piece of leather A, cut
in the form of an arc of a circle, its ends being split to form the straps a and I), each of which is provided at its end with the retain- 7 ing device D, having an arrow-shaped portion d adapted to engage openings in straps secured to the'blanket.
In testimony whereof I affix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM REED MAGRAW.
