E. M. DIEBEL.
SHOE PASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 31, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
EDWARD M. DIEBEL, 0F CONCORDIA, KANSAS.
SHOE-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. DIEBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concordia, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in devices for fastening shoes.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to dispense with the ordinary but tons and buttonholes for fastening shoes and to provide a simple and effective means whereby the overlapping portion of a shoe may be easily and quickly attached to the underlapping portion of a shoe. I also aim to provide a device of this character whereby the overlying portion of a shoe may be attached to the underlying portion throughout the entire length with but one operation.
With the above recited objects, and others of a similar nature in view, the invention resides in the novel construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe constructed in accordance with the present invention, the overlying and locking flap being shown in its open position. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view with the uppenof the shoe in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the hooks.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my device in applied position upon that class of shoes known as button shoes, and I aim to provide an overlapping portion of the upper of the said shoe with a chain member the links of which are fiat and have one of their ends provided with a. tongue extension which is adapted to engage with the co-acting link. The chain is sustained thereon in any desired manner, and at spaced intervals, while the opposite edge or underlying portion of one upper is formed with a plurality of hooks of peculiar construction, which are adapted to engage with the chain member and to secure the overlapping portion of the upper upon its underlying portion when the said overlying portion has been pressed toward the said hooks.
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
Specification of Letters Patent.

the numeral 1 designates an ordinary shoe. This shoe has its upper provided with the usual overlying portion or edge 2 and the underlying portion or edge 3 which is adapted to be covered by the said overlapping portion when the shoe is fastened. Secured to the edges of the overlying portion 2 and upon the inner face thereof is a flexible element in the nature of a chain 4. The chain member is secured to the overlying portion of the upper at spaced intervals, and the underlying or opposite edge 3 is provided with a plurality of spaced hook members 5. Each of these hooks is struck from a single piece of material and comprise a substantially O-shaped body 6 having an integrally formed hook proper S. The bodies of the hook members may be secured to the shoe in any desired manner, such as sewing, riveting, etc., and from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that it is merely necessary to pass the overlying edge 9- over the underlying edge to bring the flexible element 3 into engagement with the hooks, and thus efiectively secure the upper in its closed position.
From the above it will be noted that the hooks S of the members 5 may be brought into engagement with either the inner or outer arms or members of the links, so that the overlying portion 2 of the shoe may be secured either tightly or loosely upon the foot of the wearer or whereby the said overlying portion may be secured in an adjusted position to accommodate the shoe to the ankle of the wearer.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A shoe having one of the edges of its upper provided with a flat chain, hook secured to the opposite edge of the upper, the bill of the hook being designed to engage with either the inner or outer longitudinal arm of a link of the chain to sustain one of the edges of the upper adjustably looked upon the second edge of said upper.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
